The worst salt

ostrow

It's Dr. Goodluck Himself
Guess the Shedd uses the worst salt. And 90 percent of us as well. All of our stuff must be dieing. See thread on MACNA salt study results.

Not sure this study will be particularly valuable in the end.

Well, according to the lecture at the recent CMAS meeting, the Shedd used IO or actually their reef formula, Reef Crystals

Yes Reef Crystals came out best, IO the worst in the study. Red Sea also came out on top tied with RC and that makes me quite suspicious!

Pufferpunk we posted at the same time. This was not a slap at you as I did not even see your post as I was typing! I've received seven emails.

Still, it is right there in Reef Discussion!

Awwww thanks, I was almost in tears! I've been taking a lot of abuse here lately. Actually, the search bar doesn't seem to work for me & I didn't even know the study was here.

hmmm, I guess I'm glad I don't use IO
hope my oceanic turns out to be ok, I hate switching.
but if I'm happy with my tank I guess there is no need to switch

Oceanic wrecked my tank. If you are aiming for anything over 1.021 or so you will get wildly high calcium and alkalinity will crash. According to their own statements.

Its no brainer!!................IO for fish only and RC is for reefs.RC was the only salt I ever used for my reeftank. Even before, always there such a discusion, Cristal Sea, Kent , Oceanic ,TM....Nahh !! I'll stick to what I had. Dont jump in to the bandwagon no matter how convincing it may sound. Youre tank looks good ?,then stick to what U have, and if not, check your water first ?:)

Me as well, thought the stuff was great, mixed well etc. After a couple months, disaster....:eek1:

Maybe I'll switch to RC... It's a good acronym.

How about: Complete Marine Aquarium Salt? CMAS?

They told me. See the myriad threads in Randy's forum. It is formulated to mix balanced at 1.021 or 1.022 (I forget which). It gets exponentially more unbalanced with each point. If you mix at 1.025 or 1.026, you end up with Calcium over 500 and alk crashes, other ions also unbalanced.

I forget the guy's name at Oceanic. I spoke to them on the phone and again at IMAC 2005. They confirm not to mix above 1.021 or 1.022. So, it is not good for those who wish to keep their tanks above that, as most of us do.

So than it is to be used for FO then. Do they have some kind of lable on there that says not intended for reef tanks? It should!

Is IO okay too used if I'm only planning on keep a couple zoo's and shrooms and maybe one or two branching coral? Or should I buy rc if i'm planning on keeping any coral

From what I have seen here in my tanks IO is just fine for a reef. Now RC may mean I have less dosing to do and I may get better results, however I have not had a single issue by using IO and have what I believe to be good growth in all my corals soft-lps-sps.

Don't get too worried. I have been using IO for almost 2 years in both of my reefs. I have had no major problems at all. Though reef crystals probably has better starting elements (like alk and calcium being at perfect levels, and such)
