The_Rider - Zen Garden (~250g system)

The_Rider, great work! Compliment.
Would you be so kind to PM me the web site for your MarineTech pump?

I am looking for a return pump for my 180g tank.

Thanks!

Thank you Hermannsae :)

I send you a PM with the website

Do you have a thread for your 180g ?

Alex B

Thanks Alex. Apprechiated!

No, I don't have a thread yet. I am still in the planning process.

I do have the tank though. I got a used Oceanic, reef ready, thank for little money. I couldn't resist.
I am not so happy with the two overflows, I would prefer a cost-to-coast overflow, but I can live with it.
Looks like I will try the "œHerbie"-Overflow.
It is going to be a "œbuild-in" tank with dedicated fish-room.

So far, I am debating the components:

- Lifereef protein skimmer
- Lifereef calcium reactor or GEO reactor
- close loop with Ocean Motions 4-Way unit and Tunze pump
- return pump Tunze, or Marinetech
- 70g Refugium with surge device fed by return pump
- Tunze Wavebox
- 2 x 250 W HQI Lumenbright Pendant or 2 x 250W HQI IceCap Pendant, all with electronic ballast
- 2 x 48" T5, 2 x 36" T5, all with electronic ballast
- Moonlights
- GHL Profilux II Light controller

I don't want to sidetrack you from your thread, but I am open for some other ideas and opinions.

Thanks,

Hermann

My thread is always open for discussion lol

I don't know lifereef quality on skimmer so I cannot comment on them ... I just read a review on the Tunze return pump and it seems that they had some problem with noise also I don't think that it will be strong enough for your setup. Tunze powerhead and wavebox are awesome :D

For the GHL Profilux II light, I would go with the Profilux II plus instead. The price difference isn't much but you'll be able to control a lot more with it (Tunze Pump, ATO, Light, Temp, pH, Fans, ...) and you have the possibility to upgrade it later on with other expansion module. Let say you want to be able to monitor salinity and orp, you just have to buy the EX card and plug it in, or you need extra slots for 1-10V, just have to buy another card. For the moonlights, you may want to look at the GHL simu-L stick :P Which can be moonlight but also sunrise, sunset AND LIGHTNING :bounce3: I currently trying to find a way to have some in me setup without loosing the great line of my fixture :P

Have a nice day

Thanks for the input!

Yes, I read that too. (Tunze pumps) I am not so concerned about noise because of the fish-room, but maybe I should opt for a higher volume (gph) pump.
With approx. 30 linear in. and 4 standpipes (Stockman / Herbie) I need some flow. According to the RC calculator, I would get approx. 2000 gph with a 1.5" Standpiepe.
I agree on the controller. Just wanted to save some bucks! :)
Although, I guess in the end, it would make sense to invest in a "full" controller.

Hi Alex,

I checked out the GHL website. I do like the dimmable LED lights. That was my intension, so simulate sunrise and sunset.

Do you have any experiences with the dimmable Dual T5-strip? Can't I connect the controller with any electronic ballast (of cause should be dimmable too)?

Thanks,

Hermann

Hi Hermann

For my setup too the concern was about a great GPH. I didn't want to go external because of the noise and energy consumption ... If you are looking for great GPH and internal, there is only Marinetech and Red Dragon to my knowledge.

You can't go wrong with the Profilux II plus :D

For the dimmability (?) lol, you will need dimmable ballast. I will send you the website in MP because reefconcept is the only GHL retailer that have some in stock right now. After that, you only need to connect the ballast to your L-port on the profilux to be able to dim your lights :D. I will eventually buy these ballast, but I need to save some bucks for 2 x Tunze 6105, that's my first priority right now because I don't have enough flow and a little bit of cyano :'( lol

Alex,

I see you have the Profilux III. The only difference between the III and II/plus are some more sensors possibilities?? Everything else is the same?

How easy is the controller to program?

Thanks,

Hermann

Hi Hermann,

The main differences between the III and II :
- Built-in ability to connect through internet, design your webpage for the profilux, etc.
- PAB, that allows you to have expansion box, unlimited number of PAB powerbar
- Using expansion box, you can control more than one setup.

I think theses are the major differences, maybe I forgot some lol

The program is really easy, it take maybe 5-10 min to figure out where is everything but what I love about this controller is that they already program everything which is more reliable than if you put your own code in. Let me explain. for example your heater. You go in your sockets and assign let say S1 to temperature1- heater. After that you go in temperature, input the temperature you want and that it :D the controller will work it out to maintain the right temp and it's really precise. I had a Aquacontroller Jr before, and the temperature was swinging between 78 and 81 ... Now with the Profilux, my temps swing between 79.8 and 80.0 lol :eek2:

Alex B

... sounds pretty good to me ....
What about if the heater has his own thermostat, is there not a conflict with the controller? Or, do I have to adjust the thermostat of the heater just to 81F?
Thanks,

Hermann

Usually for a heater that has his own thermostat, you put it at the maximum since the temperature will be controlled by the Profilux itself. But I think you should invest in a titanum heater, less change that it breaks and for a 180g + sump you will need around 800W since it get's cold in PA :P I think glass heater stops at 300W or 500W.

:D

Have you found the male royal gramma again Alex? Do they still swim together, of have they established their own territory?

Got 250W Jaeger heater already. :-)
Maybe I have to invest in some heater with more power. We will see! You know, we do have heating in the house, here in PA. ;-)

Thanks for all you recommendations! I guess I will invest in a Profilux III when the time comes.

Hi Leonardo,

I did find my male the next day :D They are sharing the same territory and they are swimming together almost all the time. The male is the explorer, always the first one to go out and the females are following him. The smallest female always follow the male but the slightly larger female is more adventurous. She exploring the other side of the tank alone but not far from the territory. What is interesting is that before going out of their cave, they have their own position. Their cave has 3 exits which they cover and when they fell it's safe, they are coming out. My male is 3" and the female around 1-1.5". The picture on page 8 is my male in the foreground with females on the background. I'm really glad that I can observe and study their social interaction as a trio :bounce1:

Thanks for passing by :)

I didn't meant it like you didn't heat your house in PA lol

What's is nice about Profilux, it that you can begin with the PII kit and if you want to upgrade, you can still grab the PIII upgrade afterward and install it if you feel you need the PIII same goes with EX vs non-EX :)

Thanks Snaza

I dont have any FTS yet because I have a little bit of cyano :( I did neglect my previous setup and some rock had a little bit of cyano on them which probably seed the cyano I have right now. I think it's mainly due to a lack of flow ... I didn't bought the 6105 yet so I'm only running with 2x6055 which does not provide enough flow. At least one 6105 should be bought in one or two week so hopefully it will take care of the cyano I have on my sandbed ...

Yes I only use 6 bulbs on my setup :P It's providing me enough light to cover all the 30" :) For now, I have 2 montis near the sandbed and I can already see some growth on both of them after only been 1 week in my DT :) I may change to a BLAU 8x54W that I will modify to be a 7 bulbs + simu-L stick, all dimmable but that will be for later on, when I will have 2x6105, balling and etc.
