theory on the handik fish

Most fish eat by smelling the water. It's hard for humans to understand, but easy once you feed when underwater yourself.

Fresh leaves are very fragrant and I'd imagine any fish would take to them quite quickly. You might try an experiment by feeding lavender or another potent smelling fresh plant. My freshwater angelfish are crazy for the leaves off my rose tree (15ft tall bush).

So I don't think they're getting off on it, they may just have underdeveloped olfactory glands. You may try adding something smelly to their food to get them to eat regularly.

more examples as I thought about it a little....

stink bait for catfish

sharks smell blood in water

pirahnnas of course

so ive tried experimenting a bit with different foods. my dilemma is im scared to put something from the grocery store in my reef cause of the preservatives etc used. my tang still eats my leaves. i know its a touchy subject but i felt that i covered it in an adult and educational manner. i am not advocating people to try what i did, by freak accident it happened and by even more chance my tang loved it. before the introduction of the leaves i used the garlic food enhancer, every fish ive ever had loved it including the tang, but the tang never reacted to garlic like he reacts to my leaves.

sorry, not gonna happen here...move along
