theres a hole in my crocea

So my first crocea I got a couple weeks ago kicked the bucket after just 2 days.

I found another one (nicer!) and it looked very healthy so i brought it home. I have 2 questions.

Could you experts tell me how it looks?? I mean, this is not considerd gaping, is it? the mantle has been out pretty much since I got it a couple of days ago. And it is very responsive to light and movement. I just want to know if it's appearance is normal.

Also, there is what appears to be a small hole or tear in the mantle of this clam right in between the intake and exhaust holes. You can see it in the picture, it is maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch and sort of oval-shaped. Again, not sure whether this is something to worry about. Didnt notice it when i first got it. Nothing seems to have been bothing the clam from what i can tell.

The extra hole is definitely not normal (unless it's a genetic mutant :). Did you see any fish nip at it?

Other than a bit of "gaping" (which is normal for croceas) that you clam looks fine. Give it some time and it should heal from the damage.

I have not seen any fish nip at it. I have a clown, a bicolor blenny, neon goby, green clown goby, and yellow coris wrasse, heyare all pretty well behaved.

I once bought a crocea without noticing a hole in the same area as your clam. Give it bright lighting and it should heal up.

I would keep an eye on the bicolor blenny (or any blennies). I have read they are know to nip clams.

i have a clam (still have it) that used to have a hole just like yours but it recovered (no more hole) in about a week. didn't know what caused it though.

Yes. I've been meaning to update this thread. As of today, roughly one week after I noticed the hole, it is completely closed up. Crocea looks good now.

how could you get a crocea a couple weeks ago an have it die in the first two days? thats a paradox...

From my post on 4/2/05:
