thermometer problems

so i bought A stainless steel thermometer a while back by penn plax and i just noticed it has rust all over it right where it meets the waterline i took it out immediatley why is it rusting?

there are many different types of stainless steal and alot of them do rust and should not be put in saltwater.

Pinpoint makes a great system for monitoring temp.

Those little temperature stickers you put on the glass have never steered me wrong. After awhile though you can just tell whether or not it's safe by putting your fingers in the tank. GL.

I use the finger method as well, although I do have a glass floating thermometer as well.
