Just wondering if anyone has been there and knows of the can't miss locations? I am not for scuba;-) Snorkeling on the other hand, for sure!!

Hiking the Napali Coast, although it's a long hike. Zodiak trip along the North shore. Tubing float trip (haven't done it). Drive to Wiamea Canyon and the Kalalou Lookout. Akali Swamp if you're into nature and birds. I'm not sure about snorkeling places. Sorry about the spelling. I want to go back there next.

I have been and can tell you the zodiac to the north coast/ napalm coast is worth every penny. We saw dolphins turtles sharks and tons of fish. I will tell you the lunch sucked so eat now store you go and John ring your own snacks other than that awesome tour. The tube through the water canal is a must as well. Fun stuff. I can't remember the beaches we snorkeled at but there are many. You must hit ono burger. YOU MUST HIT ONO BURGER!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a shack burger stand but I still dream about it by far the best burgers on the island. I believe its over in anahola. Also buy this book its called ultimate kayak guide book 2011 edition. Amazon has it. Its a life saver. It will tell you all the dos and dot's on the island. Listen to the book it will save you a ton of money
Oh one last place is the queens bath. This is a dangerous place due to ocean currents but it can be a nice place visit if you trust yourself. The book will have all these places also. It will have all the dos eschew a.d best places to snorkel. It will tell you where to go to avoid crowds a.d where you should and shouldn't go because of locals. Hope all this helps.

On the northern side of the island beneath the Princeville Hotel there is a sandy beach that you can access via a long walkway down the cliff on which the hotel and nearby condos sit. At low tide there is a very, very large reef flat that is exposed with a bunch of tidepools both large and small. Many years ago I used to go here to catch things to bring home, but I would be very cautious about that now. I believe Kauai just became the second island to pass an ordinance requesting that the state make it illegal to collect any fish for the aquarium trade. While the ordinance is not actually a law, the locals may view it as such and from personal experience you will not want to cross them (lest you become the target of tossed coconuts while swimming in the water). The snorkeling was pretty good there though, and you should have zero issues as long as you don't have a net or bag in hand!

As for other items ... the beach by the pier on Hanalei Bay is the classic tropical paradise with the amazing mountains in back as you look across the bay while laying on the sand. Also in Hanalei there used to be a roadside taco truck that made the best fish tacos ever ... am not sure whether they are still there or not (right side of the road just as you drive into town from the east). A couple other snorkeling suggestions ... the other side of Hanalei Bay from the Princeville hotel has some good spots. Follow the road around the bay to the end (I think past the caves to the left) and there are a couple of reefs to the right that aren't too bad. Be prepared for possibly cooler water though!

we just got back a few months ago....best snorkeling was the south shore near the sprouting horn. Not at the sporting horn bit on the drive to it. You will see all the people right off the beach. Oh eat at Brenicks int he same area. You will find good food is hard to find and you will pay through the nose. We ate at bubbas about 5 times for the 12 days we stayed, cheapest best food we could find.

If you do decide to dive i got certified at kaui seport divers best experience ever. i loved it. You can get certified in 3 days with all your dives in. But pricy but the whole island is expensive.

BTW you will get a better deal if you stay at B and B rather than hotels if you are not locked in yet. No mater what you have to walk through the hyatt on the soth shore...it's amazing, best hotel i have ever seen.

Oh we did the wiama falls hike on the north shore, it is 8 miles! not that easy just an FYI. you will have to roc jump, wade across some areas and the trail is not that clear but there are other ppl. the view at the end is amazing. It was in Jurassic park.

If you have the money do a helicopter tour with open doors....crazing expensive but it's a once in a lifetime. also the Napoli cost dinner or sunset cruz is pretty cool, we did not go but i heard it was really good. Don't go if you get sea sick. I heard the smaller boats can rock a bit on the way out.

Oh, go to banana Joes smoothies near north shore, off the side of the road. buy a banana-apple. they are pretty good.

lets see what else....oh i heard the fern grotto is not worth checking out. It's not free, $25 a person and i heard it got a bad bug and a lot of it is gone now.

Bring hiking shoes, if you like to hike tons of places to go.

Wiamaa canyon is amazing! grand canyon in the middle of paradise. bring the best camera you have.

eat coconuts....watch for chickens they are all over!

Oh, the brick oven pizza place was pretty good in south shore, all you can eat was like 12 or 15 bucks.

Oh the coffee place...crap I can't remember…something coffee company… the exact name but it was really good....we went almost every morning wne we stayed 1/2 way between south and north shore...kind of east shore. it is kinda hidden near a craft fair that is there year round. There is a zin garden and a small koi pond. nice place to sit and enjoy.

the sunsets on the south side are amazing, bring some snacks and drinks to wiamam canyon time it to where the sunset is on the drive down, picture perfect of the "forbidden island" off the cost. We pulled over and watched the sunset.

bring lots of sunscreen and some bug spray.

Oh, go to "the fish market" that is the name of the restraunt near nort shore, pretty good, didn't look like much from the outside. Stop byt the lighthouse look out.

Just an opinion, i didn't like princeville...overpriced and for ppl with the nose in the air. If you like golf it's nice but not much to see except overpriced resort. not much night life anywhere, i liked to just relax and we watched some good movies at night.

well just relax and have a good time.

Thanks all for the responses! I and the whole family (13 of us) leave there on the 17 th . Starting to het very excited about the trip...

Keep up the ideas and stories!

I thought the snorkling in the tunnels area was fantastic!
I forget which boat company it was, but they took a catamaran to one of the waterfalls, and they gave people showers in it. It was pretty cool. Kuai was the best island by far imo.

Well if the rain keeps up I might be able to snorkel down the highway ! Flash flood warnings until Sunday afternoon. I hope it calmer down! I am supposed to fly in on the 17th! :-/
I just might end up in some disasters relief while I am there..:fish2:

I would definitely try Kauii ATV. I think they have the ATVs with the mud flaps removed so that you can get really dirty. I tried to hit every dirty mud holes I found on the road with my wife on the passenger side. For some reason, she got way more muddy than me at the end of the ride so it was so fun. Anyway, since its the rainy season there, this would be a really good time to check it out...if you're looking to get dirty...lol.

Btw...do the long lunch ride. Halfway, you get to play at the beautiful waterfall and lunch is served after. It should be a really fun day even if it's rainy.

Again I cant stress enough how much this book will save you. Someone above said good food is hard to find and is expensive. This is trueLots of places look nice but the food would suck. This book saved us from making some bad choices. We ate at some terrible places and then someone suggested this book to us. We found it on our trip and bought it. It matched exactly to what we had experienced. I hope you can get this book its so worth it

Tunnels Beach on the North Side....fantastic snorkeling! You have to watch out what time of year though. You can look it up because I forget, but there are times when the north side surf is just too rough....visibility is zip and it's just plain dangerous.

Go on a small pontoon ride of the Napali coast....small boat can go in all the caves and it's really neat.

Helicopter ride should be on everyone's bucket list.

Have an evening cocktail at the Princeville one time, just to watch the sunset from the patio outside the bar.

Rent a house....vrbo.com. We ended up in this gorgeous house right on Avila Beach and it cost less than a hotel.

Hike. Kayak. Chill. It's gorgeous. Plan where to stay based on time of year. The North side is gorgeous, but sometimes the south is better.

Shoot....great restauraunt on the south side, can't think of the name of it now. There's a bird sanctuary that is really interesting.

Tunnels. Love that place, have a picture of it on my living room wall.

You will have a fantastic time. I liked it better than Maui and I loved Maui!

pgr11- I had my wife look up the book the morning you first mentioned it. She got it down loaded on her iphone along with another app for kauai Both will work without cell service ;-) Thanks she is really liking it.

Does not matter to me if it rain all day everyday. I am going to have a wonderful time. Going to try and hit up some of the events talked about on this thread. ATV , Napali coast, Zip line, Tunnels sounds cool... just how much OT can i work to pay for all these adventures!!! i have 5 that i am re$ponsible for. (wife and i have 3 kids)

Again thanks for all the interest and advice!!

Your right on the overtime. It not a cheap trip for sure but its an awesome one. Imo your going to the best island. If its muddy and you go hiking buy some shoes or boots and pants you don't mind getting ruined. The mud is gnarl there. Man I wish I was going with you. That's it im going next year for sure
