Thinking about- Seahorse Refugium for a Reef.

So i am planning my new 180 Tank. I am interested in putting a refugium on the tank and having drain- into the 180. - putting it above.

Does anyone here have experiance with this type of setup with a refugium /seahorse tank supplying the main reef?

it has been done, but IMHO isn't the best idea:

even tropical SH should be kept below 74*F, most reefs run hotter. warmer temps = higher chance of bacterial infections.

SH are messy critters, and if you're a "pristine reef" fanatic, they will impact the water quality of the system.

i dunno what size fuge you're considering, but you'll need a
minimum about 30 gals for a pair of SH.

the bottom line is SH really are great fish, and i feel they should really be kept in a system designed for them, and not as an "afterthought" or "add-on". they are demanding, but not difficult providing their special needs are met. this is especially important for a novice SH keeper.

at the very least, i'd get some experience w/SH and then decide how to push the envelope.

Does the 30 gal rule apply for dwarf species too? Just wondering. I'm was thinking about converting a 20 gal frag tank plumbed into the main system to a SH tank, and was looking at getting dwarfs.
