Thinking about switching salt mixes.

I think RC in 200g box is a winner. Overall it's best choice. You can get it on sale for around 45$ with free shipping if you buy two boxes. I used other mixes and results were vary. last 4 years I stick with RC and I got consistent predictable parameters. I tried IO and can't say the same about that mix. RC is a better mix for reef tank.

Good to know RC is better than the regular IO

Good to know that the RC is better than the regular IO. I have been using IO for the past some months on my tanks and I wetted my new display with the IO and haven't introduced any corals yet. well, before I introduce corals, I will switch from regular IO to RC I guess.

So here is the question now, I installed a vertex calcium reactor with 10% mag media and 90% reborn calcium media and now my calcium is 440 ppm, 130 ppm of alkalinity, and 1250 ppm of magnesium now. Before adding the calcium reactor things were some what low with IO, i.e., calcium was 330 ppm, and mag was around 900 ppm.

So here is the question, even after adding a reactor should I need to make the change from regular IO to RC?
The calcium media will have all the trace elements needed to the corals right?
I have had fish before but somewhat of a newbie to corals. I quarantined all my corals (acans, zoas, and sps) and waiting for the hair algae to die in my tank before adding and the chosing the right salt mix may help me in keeping corals

I don't have a reactor, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable can respond.

In regard to RC being better than IO, it's purely up to the individual users. If you check some of the links above in this thread, some people have had issues with RC. Also according to Randy Holmes Farley, IO and Tropic Marin are the two cleanest salts without excessive additives and due to price he uses IO. I personally have no plans to switch from IO to RC.

I'm Just going to stay with the regular IO if it is possible to grow coral with regular IO/Vertex calcium reactor. Don't see a need to make the switch from IO to RC at this point. Don't want spend more than what I'm spending now.

Thanks DivingTheWorld

That's exactly right. No need to switch to RC if IO + your reactor is working to get your parameters where you need them to be.

I don't think anyone has taken the time to break down the cost difference between using RC without any other supplementation versus IO with additional supplements -- be it with a reactor or 2 or 3 part -- I always just assumed that IO would always be cheaper.
