i was thinking of a sealed 1/2 gallon - 1 gallon tank that would have some sand a small rock.
and maybe a shrimp and or a polyp coral and some algae

any tips. like what shrimp could i have that east algae. what type of algae would grow slow enough for the shrimp to keep up with

any ideas are greatly wanted

i want this compleatly sealed except for a small waterchange every few months

i plan to try this with a small fresh water first containing a ghost shrimp and possiably a guppy .

I did this back when the space program was studying scats and closed ecosystems...friend of mine dated one of the grad students working on the project. I always had scats, after that, until recently. But scats are huge.

Right now the state of the art is the ecoglobes with two tiny brine shrimp in them, a wisp of algae, and a smidge of substrate. Mine has been going 4 years now without intervention.

I believe they are common brine shrimp: sea monkeys. We get a blush of green algae now and again. There's a magnet fuzz item in the sealed unit; get a magnet and you can clean the glass. There's about a cup of water, a teaspoon of gravel, and a two inch fragment of gorgonian for interest. And the algae cycles back and froth between the spongy/hair sort and the green film.

There have been no water changes, no evaporation. It is salt water.

hey sk8r I saw those at the baltimore aquarium gift shop. they were like $70-140 though. they have a couple brine shrimp and algae in a glass ball. they are really neat. I saw a 5gallon one at that fish place a while back, they have it for the traveling pet shop thingy. I think its been self Sufficient for like 15yrs. the shrimp feed on the algae and rock and sand filters it.
