thinking of buying an asm g4, anyone know how make it a recirculating skimmer?

Thanks, but then I have to purchase the skimmer from them and there are cheaper places.....including used skimmers. :)

it is worth it.. its an easy mod mayeb asmskimmer.com will price match...

i think Sammyfisharedead did the mod on his skimmer....

It's so easy!

You need two 1" uniseals (aquaticecosystems.com sells them) and one holesaw that matches the size of the 1" uniseals (size listed on the aquaticecosystems page) I think it's 1.25" or 1.75" but not sure.

You drill a hole for the venturi to enter the body and you drill a feedhole for the water in....

The mod how-to details are on the asmskimmer website-it's so easy they tell you how to do it =)

so Jen or Charles, if I pay you 20 bucks will you do the the drilling and make it work......I am way too scared to do anything like that. I might be jewish, but I am not a jewish carpenter. :p

Hole size is 1.25 for the uniseal....Should be a breeze.

You will also need obviously another hole 3 inches above that hole. This will be your feed hole. How else will you get water in it? Stick another uniseal and some pvc or rigid tubing wichever you find better looking, and make sure its tight.

Heres a pic.Only thing u shoudl do different on this is, put the T fitting first with some pipe sticking up about 8 inches, then the gate valve then tubing/pvc for output. This was a quick pic taken with a cell phone a long time ago.

Anyway I used a holesaw and uniseals I had lying around.

You should also add the gate valve modd so you can control for wet or dry skimming.

Be sure to put the gate valve where I put it so its out of the water. They have a metal screw in the valve and if you put that first it will be submersed(rust) eventually make your water stink!

You can also add the collection cup mod.

I have these sweet mini valves, I drilled a hole on the bottom of the collection cup and some tubing into a 2 liter bottle in case it ever overflows.

O yea and one more thing this needs to be in-sump not external because sedra pumps leak when ran externally.

Unless you swap the pump for an ocean runners or eheims you can run it external and youll have way more room in the sump.

Advantage of running external:
More sump use for refugium/or temporary housing for fish. It would be more understanding if it was a reef use more sump for frag grow out.

You can set the skimmer inside your stand and sit it on some carpet. The pump and vibrations will be dead silent. Only pump that will be submersed will be pump feeding skimmer.

Youll need some tubing/pvc for the output back to sump....

In Sump:Will be louder because the the pump sitting on sump floor, then again I once used 4 mousepads and it was quite. But my water got a bit contaminated:D

I understand you always look for the quitest ways since your girl hates the noise....

Dude ASM's are so FUN!!! Haha LOL...You can do whatever to em!

Ive done it once. On a G2.

The G4 will need a bigger hole since it has a sedra9000 wouldnt it?

I can do it for free.

Mike if you can get the parts, Ill ask my boss for the hole saw I can do it. Though Im not liable for any damages....:D A G4 is pretty damn big...Im pretty scared myself to do anything to it...Anyone else with more experience?

Called my friend and he said the hole needs to be 1.50 for the S9000.

All I have around here that can do that is a drill press(not a good idea?LOL???). Everything else is too small:(

I can do it-it's really easy on the asm plastic, it's not brittle like the euroreef acylic.

I have the hole saw, I also have a 1/8" hole tap if you want to put in a drain on the cup (you will need one). The gate valve is also needed, makes tuning much easier.

The recirc mod helps if you want to run wetter skimmate. I used a tee off my return pump to feed the skimmer FYI.

If you bring it down, I'll drill it for you. I only ask that if it cracks you don't hold me liable =)

Jen or Charles, all liability is waived for any potential problems.
I am still looking for the skimmer, I have the price down to 339 (new) which means I should be able to find it in the 200 range used........still looking. I will shoot you a PM when I get the skimmer. Thanks
