Thinking of starting seahorses advice pls?

Hi Everyone.

I am an experienced FOWLR person and am thinking of turning one of my tanks into a seahorse tank.
Right now I have a 65 gallon tall (approx 3'x 1'x 3') that has been up and running since last august that I recenty emptied except for cleanup crew and pods and live rock of course.

I also have a 15 gallon that is not set up right now, but I think that would be too small.

I see most people posting here have there horses in smaller tanks and I am wondering if this tank is going to be some sort of problem due to the height.

I was hoping to just culture pods for a couple months and add some mangroves and turtle grass for hitching posts and keep the 50 pounds of live rock in there.

Any advice on whether this tank would be ok and advice on culturing my pod population.

Also wondering what species would be best to get?? Any ideas??

Thanks for you time!

The tank you have will make a great home.

I keep a 65g. YOur tank is a little short, but the seahorses only need the extra room to properly perform the courtship dance. They are resourceful little buggers and will adapt to there new surroundings.

The main modification you will need to make coming from a fowlr backround is the amount of flow. YOu need to cut it way back. 3x to 5x the tank voulme per hour is rule of thumb. I get away with a bit more with the use of multiple returns and a spraybar through my rocks.

On the pods try rotofeast. They are scavengers and will eat almost anything though.

As far as species take a look around and see what appeals best. Just make sure you get a true CB from a place like seahorsesource.com or draco so you get a healthy horse.

Good Luck.
