Third Time's A Charm!

speaking of 'lotion on the skin' - have you guys seen that youtube video/song with that as basically the only words in the song??

its way weird - i'll try to find a link when I get home from work...

Just talked to Brad on the phone today... Still no water in the tank.... Infact he hasn't even started making his make-up water yet. I'm not sure what to say, other than very very very disapointed :( maybe he's thinking about a reptile tank of some sort instead. I'm so impatient I had fish in my tank the first night!!! Get on it dude or I'm done helping!!!

He's not even plumbed yet! so even if he had water in his make-up tank - he wouldn't be able to get it anywhere else (well easily anyway)

doesn't have to plumb the entire system to start cycling the rock... The entire system is going to take 2-3 weeks to make RO water for.

HA!

Well truth be told; I put 2 of the halides over the tank today and lit it up. It looks so sweet the way it is that I don't think I want to add water to it.

Here is what is holding this all up...
I don't want a pile of rocks, and I didn't shell out the bucks for reef ceramics, so that means I have to build my rockwork. I put down the first 4 rocks for the back wall, and then I placed 3 rocks spanning on top of the bottom rocks. I used portland cement to concrete them into place. In 24 hours I will build the next level, and so on. It will probably take until the end of next week until the rockwork is done. I could get it done a bit quicker, but I am leaving myself room in the front half of the tank to sit down and work. That means that I can only build in half the tank.

Once the rockwork is finished, I am going to fill up the tank with RO water. I will let it sit for a couple of weeks and check the ph. If I don't have any major issues, I will probably add salt and turn the system on. So best case scenario the tank can be turned on in 4 weeks. That gives me plenty of time to get things plumbed.

That being said, I need to go make an order with savko.com

whatever dude, excuses are like azzholes etc....

Better be some pimp azz rockwork!

I'll give ya props if you can do anything simular to this dudes tank

That is definitely one of my inspirations for my rockwork. The problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out how to build structures that impressive. Without having the pvc racks show (which I refuse to do), my mortal hands just can't build something like that. The other problem I see, is that he used really long pieces along the bottom to counter balance the top sections. Since I won't have sand to cover that up, I can't use that trick. That means that any building I do will be pretty vertical.

Here is a shot of my connections between the rocks. I am just forming concrete around the joining area of two rocks. It seems to hold quite nicely. Right now, everything I am doing will stay with nothing but gravity. The concrete is just for safety once everything is taller.

Here is a shot of what I have done so far. I am going to try to get the next level done tonight. You can see along the bottom I have spots open for 4 Tunze 6080s. I am hoping that will be enough direct flow to keep the bottom clean.

I made a bit of progress this weekend. I am almost done with the back wall. I am planning on increasing the height of the wall on the left and right sides, but the middle is about where I want it.

Here is a pic showing the wall from the side of the tank. You can see that it does not intrude very far into the viewing room portion of the tank.
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c87/dascharisma/IMG_8959Large.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Here is the same side from the fishroom. You can see there is close to 6" of clearance behind the rocks. I plan to slide the Tunzes on their magnets from high in the tank (where I will be able to reach) to low in the tank (where they are needed for flow).

Here is that same area from above.

This is where things stand for today. I need to build about 6" higher on the left side and 10" on the right.

I went ahead and put the order in for my chiller. It is a Tradewind 230v 1Hp chiller. I had them modify the chiller so that it had 2" inlet and outlet on the back of the unit. I decided to put the in and out on the back, because it should prove less obtrusive in the room. I had them make the plumbing work with 2" pipe, since I will be using it everywhere in the system. I didn't realize that you could have a chiller customized (at absolutely no up charge I should add), but JJ told me that Tradwind had no problem making these changes. I should be getting the chiller in less than 2 weeks.

I also ordered the 2" spa flex for the system. I found a place online that sells black spa flex for the same price as the standard white spa flex, and I ordered 200ft of it. I know that sounds like a lot, but I would not be surprised to run out of it before its done. I looked into getting black fittings for everything, but I was surpirsed at the costs. For instance, a standard 2" cross costs around $5, but a black cross is $28. With the number of fittings I will need, it would have been hundreds of dollars. I know it would have been pimp to have black everything, but for now I will have to settle for "jr. pimp"

As I was building the back wall (its almost done) I realized that I would run out of the round "figi" rocks. I ended up ordering another 50lbs of figi marcorocks to make sure I have enough.

Brad

Hey it's not easy being pimp but I didn't get black fittings either! :bum: Savko didn't have all the different fittings I was looking for so I got gray ones from US Plastic. You should check them out if you haven't already.

BTW, I really like the rock formation that you're building. It's cool how you planned for the Tunzes to be hidden from the front. Take your time and do it right. Don't listen to Tinytool, that guy is full of bad ideas. Ask him about the time when he put in his reef ceramic columns early because he wanted to see what they looked like.

If I recall your were over saying "dude just add them, they have cured long enough etc...."

I don't recall saying such a thing! :lolspin: Even if I did, you are the one who ultimately has the final say on what goes in there. Heck, those things are heavy. I couldn't have put them in the tank by myself even if I wanted to!

Thanks Sone. I am definitely trying to be patient. I am spending a few hours on the rocks each night, and waiting for joints to dry for 24 hour before building near them. So far it is going great.

I saw that gray PVC is easier to come by than black, but in the end I think I will just get white. If I were going to do gray pvc (which I did consider) I would go with gray fittings without thinking twice.

Brad

Something else to consider is using something like Krylon fusion paint on your fittings. I used it on PVC pipe and the fittings for gate valve mod on an ASM G3. It's even safe to use under water. The only thing it didn't work on was flex PVC. Other than that, you can make it just about any color. :)
