This can't be right!

I am building a new sump and I called Hansen Glass in Parker for a quote on 3/8" sump baffles. The dimesnions are:

( qty 1 ) 11 1/2" x 10"
( qty 3 ) 11 1/2" x 7"

The total I was quoted was $98.00!!!!

Surely there has to be a cheaper way to go on sump baffles. Suggestions?

Home Depot or Lowe's has 1/4" in stock and can cut it right on the spot for you. Be less than $15 for that.

I have spoke with them both, the ones in Parker anyway, and they only carry 1/8" glass. They carry 1/4" plexiglass but I don't want to deal with attaching plex baffles to a glass sump. Do the ones in the Springs carry thicker glass?

From my experience with picture frames, and also from what I have read on sump threads, 1/8" will work with one big however. That being it breaks / cracks VERY easily. So if you so much as bump it with your pump, it might break. i would rather go thicker than 1/8"

Just curious why would you not want to use acrylic baffles on a glass tank? The reason I ask is I am thinking of doing some modifications to my starphire glass tank which would inviolve me replacing the back side of the tank with acrylic. Would be nice to know if there is a good reason for me to not mix the two.

It sounds like your trying to save money so your best bet would be to buy the acrylic in home depot and use aquarium safe silicone. I have 3 different different freinds with acrylic in there sumps that they installed. Just measure and cut it to size with a razor knife its that easy and cheap.

I'm running my current sump with acrylic baffles and will be making my new sump with acrylic baffles. All you need is a nice thick bead of silicone sandwiched on each side of the baffle and you're good to go.

I guess I will give acrylic a try. I had ran across quite a few threads where people has issues with the silicon bonding to the acrylic and having the baffles blow out.

Silicone won't bond to acrylic, to use acrylic as baffles for a glass tank isn't a big concern because the baffles don't necessarily have to be water tight, so you can get away with a thick coat of 'reef safe' silicone just to hold the baffles in place.

Not sure what you are going to be doing with your starfire tank. But if you're planning on that acrylic bond to be water, it will never happen.

I just (2) 3/16"x12x11.75 adn (1)3/16x10x11.75 for $4.25/pane, total of $15.30 with tax. I even had them grind off the sharp edges. This was from Banner Glass

Theres a place over by keys island called plasticare and you can look in their scrap bin and if they have what you are looking for it is like $1.00/lb and they will even cut it to size for you. I had them cut 4-1/4" baffles for my sump and it cost me like $12.00.

I remember reading where someone using acrylic had drilled several holes in the acrylic near the edges where they were applying the silicon bead to hold it in place. The thought being the silicon would stick to the glass plus bond to itself through the holes so it wouldn't pull away from the acrylic. The theory sounds good anyway.

I've used 1/8" glass from the hardware store for years. It works great as baffles, as long as the pieces aren't too big. The only time I broke one was because I was trying to wedge my skimer in at an odd angle.
