This hobby sucks

I feel your pain. I just had to bust up 3 8" colonies for the same reason. TN at the base. Did you use epoxy to attach them to the rock?

Kip I remember when that happened, I had the same issue when you did :( I read about a similar event in the 90s that wiped out more than one tank.

Leishman sorry about that.

Frankenpora i loved the speach you gave with we are gods, lol and i have one thing to say about that, and that is we are better than god because we can make it perfect in everyway, so fish tanks are the way to heaven, hahaha sry but i could never say this hobby sucks even if i lose fish/corals, anything because that is the point of keep an aqaurium is that after we fail we still keep going because this isnt a hobby this is life and im proud to be apart of it, so all reefers raise those glasses and we will say that this is not a hobby this is life that has its bad moments of faller but we still keep going until the end, god that peach of mine touch me guys, lol i think i give good speachs i think, plz comment on what i have said and do raise those glasses.

I will comment and say that your post if very confusing. Franenpora's point was that no matter how hard we try we can not recreate the ocean in our living room because we are not GODS.

switched over to all LPS, don't have all the issue associated with SPS and just as beautiful if not prettier

not sure where salty was going but i thought the above was funny. lps is great for those macro close-ups and blasting under actinic and t5 but their is no way that lps is as beautiful as sps. a tank full of chalices and acans could never hold a candle to a majority of totm which are almost all sps dominant.

only reason lps is so hot n' pricey is cause most suck at keeping sps:lol:

Although I appreciate Salty's enthusiasm, your read is right on.
There is a supreme architect in the universe, and I live happily
in that reality.

Sorry about your loss, I and others in this forum know how you feel... Besides keepng parameters as stable as possible I don't know what could have been done to prevent this. For sure I'm ozonizing my incoming 500 gal tank though.. Of course we could all could just keep LPS/softies. :eek1:

The enjoyment in this hobby has nothing to do with challenge. That's the beauty of sps... And they have some nice colors and forms. I prefer lps because, to me, the colors and forms are better. I like sps, sure, but to me they're far more attractive. No offense to anyone, as I can respect how much time, effort and money goes into the sps dominant tanks (especially totms), but I think sps tanks are boring.

i hear ya

i hear ya

hey scott -

i hear ya. when i first got back into the hobby seriously about 2 years ago, i kinda felt the same way. once my mixed reef grew out and I had a big 10" frogspawns, hammers, etc, I got bored with LPS. i realize there are a bunch of the collectible LPS that are very expensive, but for some reason all those never really got me too excited -- great colors, but mostly boring forms.

i had one birdsnest take off in that tank and grow to a softball in 4-5 months and that's when i got hooked on SPS. when you find the right balance of tech, husbandry, etc, it's amazing to watch them grow. (and a big SPS is beautiful where as I find my big frogspawn, just, uh... big.)

now granted, Leishman is way on the other end of the adventure from me, experiencing the downside of the big SPS colonies! maybe i'll post my own "this hobby sucks" thread a few years from now... :-)

in any case, LPS or SPS, it's all great to me. i can see the argument both ways.

i have to admit having a lot of admiration for folks that pull it off -- it takes a lot more than money. the only reason Leishman has had anything to lose is that *so much* of what he's done has *worked so well*.

Sorry to hear that leishman, your colonies were beautiful, I am in the beginner end of this hobby, and I could have posted "this hobby sucks" so many times already. Look on the brighter side. At least you can get them to grow that big.

I just found a better pic of my latest victim.

I'm just going to mount the 2 largest chunks in the same area, and one large one on the other side of the tank. I'll smash the rest up for frags.

Obviously you must know that you are in the wrong forum..... Most if not all here will disagree with your opinion.

I can tell you how I got into SPS.
It all started with those first corals. At the time I started I would
have aggreed wit the SPS is boring statement, It does'nt move
fish don't rub up in it, overall it's static. It all started for me by
spending rediculous amounts of time looking at my first tanks.
When you look long enough you start to see smaller and smaller
and yet smaller organisms and details. It's what I would presume
happens to any conosuer <-(not gonna look up spelling).
If you are a wine drinker you would likely progress through the
stages, and learn how to "appreciate" a good wine, whatever that means. I think what I'm trying to say is there is nothing
wrong with whatever your taste is in Aquaria. It is just that the
pinnacle of success in Aquaria is the abiliy to keep these works of
art alive and growing. Even if 99.9% of those who look at our
system have no clue what they are seeing.
So basically we are the snobs of coral :)

Fine wine is expensive cider isnt much like Acroporas...

Peronally i dont see SPS of much of a challenge nowadays, They are common place and dont deserve the respect they seem to get

Gimme a mixed tank anyday, Xenia crashes so do Acros i dont see the line between the two, Unless its Club to belong to
