I saw a local show ("Let's Go Fishing!") that was basically a weekly salt-water fishing show that went all over Hawaii and on occasionally it branched out a little. One episode took them to Christmas Island, and I remember this one from many, many years ago...because they caught those mantises, those giant, flaying, bladed behemoths, pulled them from their burrows with the promise of yummy fish bits.

It was crazy seeing those rapts flay about while the guy pretty calmly held it from behind. I was a bit saddened to find out that the mantises were, in fact, dinner for the night..but that one episode sparked my fixation with our stomatopod buddies :)

It is indeed L. maculata. The largest size ever recorded was nearly 16 inches (40 cm). The largest I have ever collected was 37 cm.
