This is pretty sad...

Right above related videos click more videos from this user and there are lots more of his tank. The fish change occasionally, but that mac angel stays, AND IN FACT I think it is a mac x koran hybrid and he might be the exact fish that was mentioned in a thread on here a couple days ago.

HELP Needed!

HELP Needed!

I'm in the process of moving my fish into a new tank. I've got a bluejaw trigger that appears to have swallowed a lot of air. His stomach is bloated and he's swimming at the top. What should I do? Should I try and puncture his air bladder or will he burp out the air himself?

Dont get me wrong, I dont feel the fish are being mistreated in any way, I just think tanks like that are kind of sad. They are ugly (my opinion), Unnatural and fake looking (again my opinion), since the tank is just chock full of fish with no real territories the fish get along (the locker room effect), and because they are all crammed in such an unnatural environment they do not exhibit many natural behaviors. I do feel bad for the fish, how boring would it be to swim around the same peice of GD rock all day long. Actually the fish probably dont have the mental capacity to care. Whatever. its all a matter to personal preference and I think these Hong Kong tanks look like absolute crap, no matter how many expensive angels they can cram in there.

Doesn't always work. Check out the Chryurus, it looks terrible;

I think some clarification really needs to be made by some people. If you are 'okay' with people overstocking their QT tanks (what all these tanks look like) with fish that okay in that size, that's one thing. If you're fine, with 20 angels in a 75gal cube, fine. But, I don't care how healthy they might appear, it's never appropriate to stuff a Vlamingii (that one link has 2, with one constantly nipping the other's tail) in a 3 foot tank. That's horrible/sad...

the chrysurus looks good if you ask me

On the plus side.. thats the largest/fattest asfur i've ever seen, and it's not even that big :(

You see these sorts of aquariums all the time in places like Hong Kong. It's a different mentality. The fish are expendable, simply an expense, part of maintaining that colorful swirl of marine tropicals. It is a decoration, not an attempt at aquaculture. It's like a Tiger Skin, or a stuffed and mounted Polar Bear: It has a powerful impact, and displays the wealth and, believe it or not, the clever and unique 'taste' of the owner.

I've seen these aquaria in a number of places, mostly in Asia, where the concept of all living things having some inherent right to decent treatment is unimaginable. These fish are things to be displayed. Concentrating them is necessary to obtain the striking effect the owner is seeking. Criticism invokes the same kind of incomprehension that you might feel if a person, observing your hardwood floor, were to express dismay at your callous destruction of the forests, or was moved to throw paint on your fur coat. It's quite the same thing.

This is typical of an Asian tank.
Yes they are always crowded, and overstocked.

But then again, consider this. So are the people that live there.
No way you guys in the US would have three generations of family living in a tiny apartment, yet they do, so naturally they have no "space" concerns for the fish.

It's all about perspective.

Average family size of 3.5 living in an average of less than 500 sq ft apartment in Hong Kong ...

the mentality keeping a very dense tank is somehow acceptable by the local ...

I think it's important that we're attacking other cultures because they are different than us.

Somehow that makes us better ??

I mean there's some pretty offensive comments in this thread already.. just for the sake of bad mouthing something they saw in a youtube video (which obviously will go unheard)

Just because things are accepted doesn't make them right... I think that can be said about a lot of things.

I've seen plenty of foreign tanks that are well equipped and stocked in a manner that promotes life and growth... But these tanks exist and it does make me upset every time I see them. As inhumane as it is with taking wild animals from the ocean and putting them in our homes I'd like to think that we provide them with something that somewhat replicates their natural habitat.

Sadly this video is one of thousands out there. To me and many others the pleasure of this hobby is being able to sustain life and watch our animals grow and thrive in our little clear boxes.

Aside from the right or wrong aspect I doubt the fish would live long under those conditions. If you focus your eyes on one fish only you can see the unnatural movement apprehension, pacing, ect. This looks like stress just bottled differently.

There's a reason why no one has any documented success of doing this on RC.........it doesn't work long term. There would be plenty of people willing to boast about it if it were possible.

These crowded tanks show up occasionally boasting success but then down the road are never heard from again. Whatever happend to the WWM tank with all those angels?

To me, there are 2 fine lines being crossed on this thread.

1) Many of these comments strike me as coming down on the wrong side of racist generalizations. Just my $0.02.

2) In terms of Dgee's comment, unless there are people here with 1 green chromis in a 10,000 gallon tank, none of us are coming close to replicating nature. All are tanks are overcrowded by factors of billions, I'd imagine. So yes, some people's tanks may be twice, or 5 times as crowded as others. But we're all facilitating the capture of wild animals to cram in a plastic box for our own enjoyment. Criticism of others for the same thing strikes me as very hypocritical.

I agree that a persons race or country of origin should have no bearing on this conversation. There are people in the US, Australia, England, Brazil etc. with tanks that are just as bad if not worse, and yes, all our tanks have too many fish in them for all of those on soapbox's. IBTL

No matter how we can take care our PET with the biggest tank on earth, would the biggest tank on earth larger than the CAPTIVE fishes we have when they are so free in the ocean? Do we really think deep enough why we kidnap them and force them into our little glass tank without their consent??

I have a 500+ gallon tank in Hong Kong and I dare not to make any comment of anyone tanks as I know I cant even provide the perfect living environment for my fishes but I'm trying to make every possible improvement if I can.

I think point 1 is a good one, no need to make judgmental comments on anyone's culture or race. That adds nothing to the discussion.

However, for point 2, I don't agree that all fish confinement is equal because it's not the same as the ocean. That argument is kind of a copout. There are differences in outcomes from different captive husbandry practices. We all ought to be providing the best environment to our fish that we can, and learn from each other's experiences.
