This is Ulva right?

It sure looks like it. Keep an eye on it if your phosphates are high (overfeedinng, decomp, etc.) but otherwise any herbivores should gobble that if its newer.

Newer tank?

yeah newer setup. been running for about 4 months only 3 fish in the tank. I set that tank up with all dry rock, but added Ulva to the refugium. I am just surprised to see it in this tank as that means the Ulva traveled through about 700 gallons of water before it could get into the 280 and settle onto the rock and start growing like that. I am not even sure how that algae propagates.

I had ulva for quite awhile in my refugium... I have never seen it attach to anything. Are you sure it isn't just sorta stuck on something else? From what I understand it only attaches to something through spawning, once detached it will never reattach.
I always found it to be a fast grower although getting fish to eat it was hit and miss for myself and everyone else locally that I would give it to.

I did not put it in this tank and I could get you several pictures of it growing on the rocks in several stages. Look close at those photos you can actually see a lot more smaller pieces growing out of the rock. That's why I questioned what it is. The rock in the 280 and the seahorse tank were dead rock from BRS and Marco. But The algae you see in the photo is growing right out of the rock as if it were seeded somehow. I have never heard of Ulva doing that (but I am far from an expert on that subject) so I am curious if it is Ulva or something that looks like it.

The piece you see in the photo started out as a tiny spec of green just like the ones you see sprinkled around it.

I put a smallish piece of ulva in my refugium a few months ago, and now I have it growing EVERYWHERE, it even grows on my other macros.

OK, cool so normal behavior. And actually I am glad it is growing in so well. I plan to add a few tangs after the seahorses settle into their tank.

Thanks GNU

Glad I could help! Unfortuately, tangs and seahorses don't mix. If the ulva is in your SH tank, nerite and turbo snails will mow it down for you.

My ulva problem is in my SH tank too, but I have so many macroalgaes that I want to keep, that I'm just stuck with manual removal :(

different tanks I would never try to mix them lol. yeah I will probably just have to do that in the seahorse tank. I pulled some large pieces off the rocks the other day I was surprised how well attached it was. It did not want to just come off like I thought it would. I do have a few nerite snails in both tanks. They do not seem interested. Turbos are already on their way.

I also have a lot of macro in the seahorse tank. bottom of this page shows the tanks. I do not have as much Ulva in the seahorse tank as I do the main.
