This may just work, chime in.

Keep in mind I've been on duty for 14 hours so far, sitting in my car, staring at a container I'm supposed to be "guarding". So all i have is time to think.

A ~10g housing just zoanthids. Bare bottom. One piece of cured live rock. One powerhead. And a light sufficient for growth. Zero bioload in the tank. What's to say the tank needs to cycle? There's nothing to cycle for. Theoretically, there will never be anything to filter out of the tank. Nothing for the beneficial bacteria to feed on. So according to my sleep deprived conclusions... I don't even need the rock? Quality salt, water movement, and quality light. Why would i need more? I could just plop the zoas into their brand new day old tank. Feel free to shred this idea to pieces. Just food for thought.

The zoas don't produce much waste, but still a little. Regular water changes could help that though. I'm basically doing the same thing, but I did use LR. I don't think the zoas or their algae will like it very much though...The frag of zoas will probably contain some of the bacteria, though, too, so you might just get a cycle anyways...

I can't imagine it would be much of a cycle though, almost undetectable. I have a trash frag i might just try it with.
