This..

But the guy that sells them said he keeps his with his clowns nd there are no ill effects and the clowns don't host it because the nem is too small. Will the first one eat my clean up crew?

The guy is first trying to sell them to you to make $$$. He doesn't really care if his carpets will eat your fish or not. Yes right now the carpets aren't eating the clownfish but don't be suprised one day when you wake up and they are missing.

welcome to saltwater reefs get ready to be lied to about what you need and what you can put in your tank thas why reef central is here
you can not control what a clownfish will host

I know that, they host a leather coral, but I just wanted the authenticity of a real anemone. I guess i'll have to wait for a larger tank. Thanks guys! :)

Looking at your experience and registration date, I would guess your tank isn't ready for an anemone at this point anyway. If you want one for your clowns, your best bet is going with one of the hosting anemones - when you and your tank are a little more seasoned and stable. I would definately wait for the larger tank too, it's easier to keep them stable.

Something to research during the waiting period is a bta (bubble tip anemone). You can get captive clones in most cases, and these tend to be hardier and heathier - which is a great starting place! These also tend to be the least demanding and the most forgiving of the hosting anemones.

Good luck and you're doing a great thing by researching your livestock first!
