Those with flasher wrasses...

How long did it take for your wrasse to come out and swim in the open? I just put mine in the DT yesterday from QT and he is hiding in the rocks and only came out for a second to grab some food, then right back in he went. I wanted a fish that swam around so I hope he doesn't always hide!

well it completely depends on his tank mates. ideally you want to add any wrasses particulary flashers and faries 1st. what are his tank mates? how large is he? did you turn the lights off when introducing him? it is normal to have them hid for a few days, esp if your tank has no other wrasses in it. If you ask me they "feed" off the social interaction between the species and often come out because a neighbor came out, and before you know the whole neighborhoods out to play.

He appears to be full grown at around 3-4" so he's pretty big. Other tank inhabitants are 2 carberryi anthias, 2 small ocellaris clowns, green mandarin and a juvenile kole tang. I honestly don't think the other fish know he's there because he's hiding all the time. I plan on getting a yellow wrasse (halichores sp.) too if that will help.

The yellow corris is usually pretty safe. Mine bothers nothing and has never shown any aggression. I wouldn't put it past him to flip a snail or maybe eat a small shrimp if under fed but really never even had one issue. Great fish IMO.

I was going to say that people suggested I add a yellow coris wrasse to my 125 gallon tank as my last larger fish species. I am doing a reef. Dont want to high jack the thread, but I was curious, would a trio(1 male, 2 female) of flashers or three different species of flashers be better to bring out color?

lol high-jacks always happen...

So anyway, the wrasse still only came out for food yesterday and whenever he came out he seemed a bit pale. Could it be that the light is a lot brighter than the QT tank? I was thinking of possibly only having on my blue lights (purple+ and actinic) for a day or so. What do you think? or will he just come out on his own?

My McCoskers flasher never really hid. He also eats everything like a pig. He's in a tank with two clowns and a YWG. He is pretty much always out looking for food or flashing at his reflection/the clowns.

In my experience a new wrasse will be shy for the first few days. Pay attention to the other fish when the wrasse tries to come out of the rocks. I would guess that someone might be picking on him. Keep up feeding the tank a little more than usual for the first few days to keep aggression low and hopefully the new wrasse will find it's place in the tank. Make sure you have a net top for the tank otherwise you'll have dried wrasses eventually.

i would hold off on the coris wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus ).He is not reef safe but if its fish only then go for it.

This is not true, I have kept several yellow wrasses over the years. They will sometimes grab a hermit or a small shrimp, but they are great fish and stay relatively small as adults. The colors in their face and tail are worth the risk for me to have to replace a few hermits. "Reef safe" is a term that is outdated IMO.

Thanks for the info! Today he is coming out a bit more but still hanging close to the rocks. He seems to be getting a bit more bold when it comes to grabbing food too. I don't see anyone bothering him when he's out. My kole tang is curious and swims over there to take a look but doesn't show any aggression towards him. hopefully by the end of the week he'll be swimming all over.

Oh and I do have screen tops: the 1/4" clear netting from BRS. There's no way for him to get through :)
