Thoughts on expanding membership.

Well, I certainly don't mind helping out, but as I mentioned before, whether I'm the right person or not kinda depends on what "technologies" are available where the site is hosted.

For example, if I was going to install DotNetNuke or Community Server, the website would need to be hosted on a Windows based web server with the .NET framework installed. I would also need access to a single database on a SQL server. That's all kind of a mouthful, but it's pretty standard stuff for windows based hosting.

If what we have available for hosting our site is something else (PHP on a Linux server for example) then someone else would probably be a better fit than me.

I don't know where the site is currently hosted or what we are paying, but hosting is pretty cheap for a site that hosts a relatively small amount of traffic. We could probably get a hosting account with GoDaddy that has everything that I need to install either product for less than $10 a month.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. We need more tools(maybe a calendar that can have entries added by the members of the website) on the website. We need content updated regularly. I think we should designate a team of volunteers to admin and support the website so the burden does not rely on one individual.

Godaddy is a decent place to host. I have a couple sites on there and it is cheap and it is pretty easy to admin.

I don't know anything about .NET but I do know some PHP plus the standard HTML and CSS and would be willing to help if some was needed.

Oh, I'd also like to add that I think the Davenport area was having some pretty good success with new member recruiting via the GIRS posters that they put in the PETCOs and fish shops. I know the Des Moines chapter should probably look into this.

I talked with him a little more on this. Most is over my head and maybe Pygmy can chime in too on this. I think he said that most of this was created in Dreamwaver if that means anything to anyone.

As far as our server goes..right now we have a"special deal" going on. I hope that we can continue to keep that because as I understand it is is a pretty sweet deal for GIRS. If anyone has any specific questions let me know and I will see what I can do to get the answers as well as getting qualified people access to the site to check out if it is something they can update/change.

I just did a little bit of investigating and it looks like the site is currently running on an Apache Web server. This means that it's most likely running on a Linux box and ASP.NET/SQL are probably not available.

It's possible that whoever is hosting the site currently provides windows hosting as well, but they would have to tell us...

In any case, unless you all want to change hosts, or unless the current host offers different windows based hosting services, then I'm probably not the guy for the job.
