thoughts on gig?

hello,

well, i'm not sure what to do about my carpet nems. i have a 60g nem cube tied into the same sump as my 75g mixed reef. there have been no new additions for a couple months. i have a purple and a multi colored gig along with a purple haddoni.

the multi colored gig has deflated 3 times in the past week. it has been in captivity for several years. with no new additions for several months, i'm hoping it's not a pathogen.

maybe it ate something like a hermit crab that it's having a rough time with?

i'm hesitant to put it into a ht and treat since there have been no new additions lately.

the purple gig is looking better then ever. i moved the haddoni into the reef tank, in case it was irritating the multi colored gig somehow.

thoughts???

multi normally
purple happy and healthy

I would be willing to bet that it has ingested something and having a hard time passing it. My mag is an absolute killer that eats anything and everything. I had a LARGE cleaner shrimp try and steal food from it once and that was his end. It spent nearly 2 days trying to expel the remains and the entire time it looked like deflated death. Scared the %^#$ out of me, but eventually he came back around. Here's hoping it's nothing worse!

If your lights and water quality are good, maybe try taking a powerhead, maybe mj400 or mj600, (temporarily) stick it on the front of the tank aiming at where the gig stops and the rock starts. Try getting a little current under the disk, see if that helps.

ugh... i just got home from work and it's deflated again... the purple gig looks better then ever. not sure what's going on, but it's stressin me out!

blackgate, i hope that's it. i'm not sure though. guess time will tell. the purple one is seriously diggin the hydra 52 though. lol

taylor t, yes the water quality is good. everything else looks fine except for my multi colored gig. my sps are actually looking better then ever along with the purple gig. i'll try the powerhead. i have an extra mp10 that i'm not using.

no, i stopped feeding my gigs when they reached about 10" in diameter. they do eat the occasional fish though. i have them come up missing on a fairly regular basis.

You're sure it's not your frogfish eating those fish? :D

lol no, not the frogfish :) he was pretty awesome! regrettably, he passed away a little while back. i ended up breaking down the tank. not the same without my little monster. now... he would eat anything! he even ate a fu manchu lionfish that was as long as him! lol i miss that little booger....

the gigs nail fish on a regular basis. sometimes they just disappear, and sometimes i will see them after they get hit. they will have white welts on one section of their body, and they usually are gone in a day or so.

the gig is inflated this morning. i'm keeping a close eye on it. i haven't fed that one in literally a couple months. hoping and praying that it pulls through...

What kind of fish does your gig snatch up?
I like my fish and would hate to have them killed by an anemone on a regular basis.

i like my fish too, but so do my gigs. lol it's usually the new additions that get hit. lets see...

red lizard blenny
pink spot goby
red corris wrasse
blue spot filefish
yellow tail whip fin
and a handful that i can't recall at the moment...

i was able to rescue a blue spot jawfish. i found it on it's second day in the tank with welts. i put it in rehab for a week, it healed up some, put it in my reef tank for a couple weeks until totally healed, hooked a buddy up with it, and it was eaten by his haddoni in less then a week. lol some fish just aren't meant to be around carpets :)

i have 12 fish in the nem cube that have been in there for months though. just depends on the individual....

I'm worried the most about my mandarins - they seem to be too careless and sometimes get stung a bit by the Maxi Mini. But I doubt the can get away with that on a gig.
The fridmani are pretty good at avoiding contacts with corals and anemones so they should be good.
The shrimp gobies usually don't wander around and should be safe too.
The bluestripe pipefish may be at risk - I had one before that would swim right through the tentacles of a crispa.
Maybe I need to rethink the idea of a gig in my big tank and keep them in separate tanks with just clownfish.

yah, i would advise having a separate tank for the gigs. they can and will eat fish, ime. that's why i don't have them in my reef tank.

They'll take pretty much anything. Fish that stay off the rocks will tend to be at a lower risk than others. I'm setting up my system with a dedicated carpet tank because of it.
