Thoughts on this deal?

As some of you know, I've been putting together a list of supplies for a 40 build, but I stumbled upon this craigslist ad (can we post craigslist ads here?) for a Red Sea Max 250 for $500. It comes with some fish that I'd probably just take to the LFS for store credit.

I'd be happy to PM the link to anyone who would be willing to take a look and let me know if it's a good deal.

Or, if I can post it here, I will.

Thanks!

This one: "Red Sea Max 250...tank and stand..PRICE DROP! - $495 " ?

It is a 66 gallon all in one system with some scratches. I believe it comes empty for $500, looks like they want an extra $200 for the livestock, rock and sand.

One thing to consider with the red sea tanks, and I don't know if this is true with the 250, but the 130 often runs too hot and may need a chiller.

For an empty tank, even an all in one, I would say it is a little overpriced, others can chime in. However, if it is exactly what you want, then you may be able to talk them down to $400 and get a decent setup.

On a side note, a yellow tang, a blue tang and a sailfin tang in a 66g tank with 3 clowns is scary!

I've always liked the RSM products. I use to have both the 130 and 250. I sold the 130 when I moved and kept the 250. Right now I have it stored in the garage at my rental until our new house it built.

I converted mine to LEDs. I use to build custom led fixtures, so I did my own led build, but there is a company called Steve's LEDs that has conversion kits. There is a dedicated forum section for just RSM tanks and a number of folks have used the conversions and seem happy with them.

I am looking forward to getting my 250 up and running again. I did use a hang on overflow and put a fuge at the bottom of the stand. It allowed me to have the skimmer out of the sump area at the back of the tank.

It does have a hood and you need to decide if you like that look or not. I like the hood it hides the lights.

It's $500 empty?! I thought it was closer to $2k? And I would definitely trade ALL of the fish. I figured, since my budget (for the 40 breeder build) was $1,000, I could get the tank, live rock (ditch the sand/trade the fish) and still have room to upgrade the lighting to LEDs. Hmm.... I'll have to wait until I see the pics of the scratches and make sure the fish aren't knocking on death's door.

Great to hear, thank you! I'd love to get one of those fancy new white ones (either the Max or Reefer series), but the price is just way (waaaay) out of my budget.

It maybe easier and a little less money but its so much ore satisfying to build your own!

lol, that's true. I still have a lot of thinking to do! :)

$500 for a used one is not a bad price. It would depend on how noticeable the scratches are. I got mine for $300 because the lights in the hood didn't work, but since I was converting it to LEDs it didn't matter.

The hood can lead to heat buildup. There is a location that 2 PC type fans can be installed to help cool the top and thus keep the tank cooler. In addition, the hood has slots for 6 fans, but Red Sea only has 4 installed. You can install 6 higher flow fans to also help in cooling. I prefer using Gelid silent fans. I installed 6 Gelid fans in my hood. My hood runs much cooler with LEDs in the hood, I also installed a temperature switch that turns the fans on and off based on temperature. No need for a chiller.

He (I assume it's a dude) sent me some pictures... even with a cell phone, the scratches are kinda noticeable - that worries me a little. I've asked for clarification. Maybe for the right price....

Don't do it, build your own!!! It's so much more satisfying!!!

LOL! I have had my BC29 for 5+ years - building my own seems so terrifying (although slightly less so since I've been researching it like crazy) ;)

Ehhh, I think the scratches are going to bother me. It's a shame because the tank looks like it was well cared for otherwise. Darn!

Back to the 40b drawing board!

Did you see the 40b for sale here on the our local forum?

I actually DID see that, thank you! :) I just dislike the overflow being on the end like that.

Speaking of overflows, talk to me people! Can they be made from glass? Is there a tried and true method? I saw some available online, but OUCH - pricey! Should I (by I, I mean my husband) attempt the bean animal style overflow? Is it overkill? Heeeeelp!

I've been trying to keep an eye on your build however been a little busy with work and all to pay attention. It seems to me that you were thinking of a bigger tank with a overflow.

Well if you are I have a 90 aqueon drilled reef ready tank that I would be willing to part with. I don't need it anymore. It's in good condition, I'm unsure on if it has scratches. I'll have to look at if your interested in it. Three sides have been blacked out with kyron fusion black spray paint. If that's a issue for you I'll be glad to remove it.

But like I said I don't need the tank anymore and its sitting around collecting dust.

I'm will to take more picture this afternoon after work.

You may be right - and maybe it'll give me the guts to set up a big ol' fowlr sometime in the future. ;)

Soooo tempting! Unfortunately, I think a 90g might be a bit much for me at the moment. Plus, the lighting on that bad boy would put me way over budget. Thank you for thinking of me though!

I'd wait, there are better deals. This guy got a rsm 250, chiller, and other supplies for $100

Fair enough and I figured it would be over your budget, however it does not hurt to make the offer to you.
