anyone know if there are any cool little tide pools with hermit crabs, anemones, etc in the bay area? similar to the ones further south in monterey or santa cruz?

None in tha bay area itself, but, right on the other side of the mountain, Half Moon Bay and Pacifica both have some great tide pools.

Fitzgerald marine reserve is great for tide pooling, it's located in Moss Beach. There are many more spots in the vicinity as well.

I know Point Reyes has some really nice ones, and also up even more in Mendocino (but that's further than monterey is =)

But definitely look up point reyes, they have amazing tide pools

Have you always lived in Montara? I thought you lived in HMB?

I changed my location from HMB to Montara because it's where I actually live. Nobody seems to know where Montara is, so I just say HMB and grimace (Montara rules!!!).

Can you say where in Point Reyes?

Regards,

Roy

I don't remember exactly where it is, I went when I was a kid (which wasn't too long ago I know) but I couldn't say exactly. A lot of my photog friends have gone many times and taken pictures of amazing animals. I'll ask them where they go specifically. One girl took pictures of an amazing green anemone that had grey splotchy skirt... really neat.

I second the Half Moon Bay suggestion, I went there for a school trip once and saw a crazy amount of life (plus an old block from a car engine haha).

As for the Santa Cruz tidepools, I haven't been to any in awhile, but if you go, check the tide chart and go when there is some huge crazy negative tide reading--you'll see more.

In SC (my hometown), at minus tide, at Natural Bridges, you won't get to see much more as how the reef is situated, but, at Pleasure Point, you get to see MAJOR tide pools at low tide. The reef flat is very shallow and broad. At negative tide, you can walk for several hundred feet on a reef that is always under water. you get to see some channels at times with baby leopard sharks swimming in the, larger fish, etc. Brilliant place to bring kids (that you can keep a very close eye on).

The place in Bolinas is called Duckberries (sp?) Reef which is a reserve. MAJOR life as it's been protected for a long time. I saw abalone exposed at low tide there, stacked on each other in a crack :D

ducksbury reef is what you are thinking of... A lot of that stuff is harder to access from teh shore especially if you have kids with you... For some reason I remember some places in the marin headlands... You might wnat to try searching the golden gate national recreatoin areas...

Well if Livermore can consider itself part of the bay area, then Half Moon Bay and Pacifica are right next to dead center in it! :D

But yeah, did a couple trips down to HMB, a particular marine reserve there with some kick butt tides.

At a minus tide, I'd not hestitate to take a kid with you there :D My parents brought me to the tidepools at a very early age. I used to live a few blocks from a very nice tide pooling spot in SC. Harder to get down to, but I can remember scrambling down at around 4 years old. Kids now a days are coddled far too much. Getting dirty and falling down are a part of life. IMO it is essential to growing up.
