you are right.....i'm laughing. okay...put a drop of salt water on the lens. close the lid. hold it up to the light...where the shaded area and the white area meet...that's your reading.

it's hinged, should flap down over the lens and smoosh (technical term...i told ya...from the woman who helped design and build the B-2...) the water like on a slide...

that's where they meet, right? hold it up to the window light. if it makes you feel better...rinse it off (with ro/di) and do it again. looks like you were able to drop the salinity last night...
 
tips ..

take off glasses if you have them..pain in the but lol

turn the eyepiece to focus

kinda squish the sample in the refractor

K did it again Im 2 lines_____ below 1.030 and 2 lines under 40 PPT
