Time for a Tang or two-Which ones?

I have a 9" d Sailfin, a blue and a orange shoulder in my 210. They are all beautiful and get along. The orange shoulder has a crazy amount of personality and would defiantly worth looking into. FYI, while the orange shoulders can get quite large, mine has been the slowest growing of the tangs I've kept.

Remember the Chevron will turn black with age... so you'd have two dark fish if you go a Purple and Chevron.

I love out Chevron and our Black Tang the most right now. I'd say maybe a White Tail and Achilles in your tank...

When I was a newbe many moon ago, I had a Sailfin, Purple and Yellow in a 90 gal tank. They did fine for 2 years until I broke my tank down.
If you want, that combination is fine. They will be fine in your 250.

+1. Julian Sprung keeps a few zebrasomas and a hippo in his tank also. It's about the same size as OP's tank if not smaller.

definitely leaning on the purple so only real question is what nice color pal should he have. I am only thinking of 2 tangs as I have a magnificent fox face and I think the algae will be at a premium with them. even with the nori sheets.

Could do an orange shoulder with him or a a chevron. could go simple and do a tomini or a yellow eye kole. I like the PBT and the Naso but I keep hearing they are very hit and miss on hardiness, am I hearing correct?

I hear ya. The red sea is awesome, too bad it and a purple would kill each other.

Years ago I kept a large desjardini in the 6-7 inch range and a 5 inch purple in a 180. They were fine together and spent most of the time palling around. I also had a powder blue in that tank that liked to get feisty around the nori clip, but wasn't too bad.

The only real problem I had was trying to introduce a similar sized yellow to the mix. The desjardini and powder blue accepted the new addition relatively fast, I'd say within half a day. However, the purple tang and the yellow went after each other incessantly, and after about 2 days of nonstop fighting, I pulled the yellow.

In my opinion, with your size tank, there is a good chance you may be able to keep all 4 of those species together if introduced in the proper order. Especially since there are three separate genuses represented. Probably the most important thing, if you do settle on a purple, is to introduce it last. Although they do vary in personality quite a bit, the meaner ones can be really hard on newcomers once they've established their territory.

Powder Blue and Purple would be really nice. Of these two, the PB is more aggressive. I would add Purple first then Powder blue, or else add at the same time.

I agree, the two species really compliment one another chromatically. Actually the trio of purple, pbt, and desjardini was my favorite group of tangs that I've ever kept. Both the purple and the pbt were so vibrant in color and the desjardini is really hard to beat for pattern.

If you are a good reefer with the tank that size you should have no problem with PBT. I never have problem with this species. You got to have good water. If you can not do that them what is the use of keeping fish. Have to have enough eqibments to keep water temp and salinity stable and oxygenated. Do enough water change to keep nutrients down. It is not hard to keep a reef tank in great condition for fish

True, water condition is a must and is something I don't even think about because its a given that it should be a priority.

Orange shoulder's are great, mine has actually been the fastest growing of my four Tangs and now at 8" is second in line to the throne after my Sailfin. I also have a PBT and a Tomini. When I upgrade I will have the chance to add another and will probably go for a Yellow as I miss that colour since the OS changed.

#2! Z. desjardiniis are just next to being my favorite tang, beat by N. unicornis. Chevrons are amazing too, even as adults.

I was just looking at a list of tangs and saw the Atlantic blue I think its called. Kinda a PBT shape but more of a darker blue, sweet looking. Maybe that and a red sea sailfin.
