As many of you know, following a complete new build of my tank and some success, my tank suffered from a severe (and I mean biblical) outbreak of what I'm pretty sure was bryopsis. This was absolutely demoralizing and nearly made me drop out of the hobby.
Well, to make a long story short, I basically ignored my tank for a few months. No feeding, skimmer cleaning or pretty much anything else. I was so ticked off by the tank, I didn't even want to look at it.
A few days ago, I forced myself (actually, my daughter kind of gave me an ultimatum) and I looked at the tank. Low and behold, the bryopsis is basically gone. Amazingly, the fish are still alive and well although the anthias is a little skinny. Most of the small SPS frags I had are gone but most of the Zoas are fine.
I'm going to do some big water changes and try to get the detritus (I'm guess ing mostly dead bryopsis) out of the tank but I have a good feeling about this. My guess (and that is all it is) is that the bryopsis used up just about all of the nitrates and/or phosphates in the tank and then, the nitrogen cycle cleaned up the rest.
I tested the levels in the tank and Nitrates are unreadable, phosphates are pretty close (although the test kit bites), Ca and kH look fine.
Perhaps time does heal all wounds.
