Time to talk about the dream.

Reel North

New King of Quarantine
Alright. This isn't right now, but planning can't start too soon for a beast like this.

Currently I have a 220 sps reef, and I have an angel problem - I love them.

Current tank is 72 X 30 X 24 tall.

I have an emp about 4", and in my QT I have an annularis, majestic and blue face.

I have a Lifereef skimmer now, which will handle the upgrade, and a wave line 10000 as a return right now.

I plan to stick with a Refugium, but a much better designed sump. Wider, and shallower than the 125 tank I'm using now.

I like T5 lighting, but may head back to halide depending on the final dimensions and depth.

Plan is to have it be an in wall, with everything behind the wall in the room.

I'm thinking of 8x3, 8x4 or 10x3 or 10x 4

I'm unsure of the height. I like the 24", but if I can get at both sides, maybe 30" would look better?

Any tips, suggestions etc are welcome

Just curious as to why so tall?
Do the fish actually use that extra space?
My friend has a 36" tall and i never really see much action at the top..
Just a curious Question As i am debating my tank size as well..

My buddy has one that height. He has SPS too to bottom and its jammed full of fish. They use the height. I think the key to that height is that when the fish get big, it's not that tall.

With the angels I have, when they get big, my 220 will be a nano lol

Those angels get big, Personally, I'd go 36 plus, I have a 36" tall tank by 6ft. Currently planning a 96x42....at a length of 8 ft and longer anything shorter just doesn't look right to me, plus the height looks just awesome, and your fish will love it.

36" tall is nice but keep in mind with a tank that large if you are going to use Acrylic it will be Expensive and thick!

My tank is 120x36x30 and personally I love the dimensions. If I had a lot more space then I could have went with a 120x48x36 but the 36" height is a PIA to work with especially since I am going bear bottom. For my arms, 30" is the max.

I think you definitely should go 30" tall tho, a 120x36x24 would not look tall enough IMO.

Arman- is your 120 one piece of acrylic? or are you doing glass?

Also- what are you using for an ATS?

Hey,

It's one piece of acrylic. 1" thick.

I am going to be using a Turbo Aquatics L8 scrubber. They are in production and should be shipping soon. He also has larger ones for your tank like an L16 for up to 16 cubes of food a day.

Holy hey! 36" tall. That's a BEAST

HOW DO YOU HANDLE FLOW IN A TANK THAT TALL AND WIDE
30" tall is great for a 10 ft long tank. 36" is better but it is a pain in the butt to reach things on the bottom. wider is definitely the way to go though. mine is 120x48x30 and I am so happy that I went 48 wide.

I use 2x gyre for flow, one on each end and I get swirls in the middle. one pulses the other is on constant. both about 80%

In the wild no fish that big would ever dream of hanging out in water that shallow all day. Even if they aren't using all that space big fish will still appreciate having a few extra inches of water over their heads.

Totally agree. I love the shelf & branch look, which is really open. If the shelves started somewhere 8-10" off the bottom, a 400w halide would hit the par #s easily.
