Time To Thin Out The Broodstock!

I need to clean out my broodstock a little bit (non-producers get sent to pasture ;) ) so the following pairs and individual are available. All of the fish have been through extended quarantine and in my systems for quite some time; in the case of the pairs they are all well bonded and true partners (not just two random fish put together) . I don't have pics available on these, but if you have any questions please PM me.

Two bonded pairs of ocellaris, females are 1.75 -2.00 inches, males are about .5 inches smaller. Good coloration; look like holotypic ocellaris with excellent body shape and finnage. Anemone trained, and I believe all 4 fish were wild sourced (I prefer WC for broodstock purposes to ensure genetic variability). $60 per pair.

One bonded pair of true percula. More orange and black coloration than your basic percula but not onyx (more what I would call "heavy black" style). I purchased this pair for $100 3 years ago but alas they just don't want to seem to put down a nest for me. $80 for the pair.

One lonely and quite cute naked clown that looks like a big orange gumdrop goby. This little fella lost his mate a couple months ago and I haven't tried to pair him (perhaps "her" now) up with another partner. Very friendly and eats pellets out of your fingers. $40.

Thanks ...

Robin has top notch livestock guys [and gals], I got my bonded ocellaris from him two years ago, and they're still doing awesome!

is the pair you got a "productive" pair?
so if a pair has been deemed unproductive, will they still become productive at a later point in time?

Tmantaylor, I do make it down to the South Bay sometimes, so if the percs don't sell perhaps we could meet up.

D-Tofu, thanks for the kind words. These guys are part of my broodstock sets which I am incredibly picky about choosing and they go through a very long QT (sometimes up to 8 weeks) before going into the broodstock system. None of these have had any disease whatsoever and they are all eager and hearty eaters (frequently waiting at the top front of the tank whenver they see me going by!).

Doughboy, these pairs are being cycled out since I've had them for a couple years and they have not yet put down nests (I typically would term those pairs that have put nests down to be "proven pairs" but if there are no nests yet and they cleary show an attachment to each other then they are "bonded pairs"). Given that I have a limited amount of space, every couple years I cycle out the pairs that aren't producing for whatever reason. However, this is not to say they are not capable of producing, which is quite frustrating. In fact, a couple years ago I took two ocellaris pairs down to Tyler at Dolphin, and he found homes for them with a couple of customers. The funny part of the story is that both those customers came back within a couple of weeks and reported that the pairs had put down nests ... *** sigh ***. Sometimes you never know, which is why I try to cycle the stock through if they don't seem to be in the mood in my system for some reason.

Oops, sorry R gonzalez to not have answered your question ... sorry no pics but the ocellaris look like typical fat and happy ocellaris (no special markings) and the percs have heavy black bands with some side coloration (but not to the point where one would consider them onyx).

Thumbs up for Robin I sold him a pair of gold stripe maroons about 6-7 yrs ago he's a great guy... Robin any babies for sale soon?? I'll be setting up a new 30g cube and was planning on putting my current gsm's in there but maybe I'll try something different

Hey Robin!
The false percs I got from you about 2 years ago laid eggs yesterday for the first time!! Woohoo!! Just wanted to share that with you (want the eggs?). And if anyone has any doubts, Robin is top-notch.

Tom

Thanks everyone for the kind comments :) ... I may have to create a "reef rainy day" folder and save this thread in there to look at in case i ever get bummed about the fish!

Sorry to say no babies right now except for a single and possibly a bonded pair of those really unusual matched "tuxedo" Darwins I showed at BayMac last year. I was hoping to hold onto them and possibly see if i could get more of a black picasso / snowflake type of morph, but the new tank needs equipment so I'll keep at least one pair but could be talked out of the others.

Good news on the baby front is that the #1 onyx pair has put down two nests now although the eggs were gone the next day. Hopefully they'll get it right soon, and if they Darwins get back on track then I'd be really happy.

Tom, congrats on the new hatch and if you want any rotifers I'd be happy to give you some. If the eggs are on a removable item we could try hatching them out if you wanted to try and raise the babies ... lotsa work though, I have to warn you!

Robin, the eggs are on a piece of LR rubble that is easily removable. I do not want to try to raise them myself. I was just offering them to you in case you were without a clutch right now and wanted to raise them. (Maybe make some money on them so you can keep your tuxedo darwins and get us something special and unusual out here!)

Anyway, they are yours if you want them; if not, it'll be survival of the fittest!
