Tinpanva's Reef Part Deux - 60 Cube

Time for an upgrade baby! My ole 29 bio-cube has hit the 3 year mark so I feel it's time for an upgrade. I wasn't going to do another tank unless I knew what I was doing and didn't nuke the 29. I would say, I did pretty good.

Ran across a really good deal on a new 60 cube and stand. I had the back drilled so I could do full siphon with the original reef ready setup. Cut one tube about 4" below the emergency drain.
Tank has been running for 26 days now and the cycle has finally ended. Plan to monitor a day or two to verify, then add a CuC and begin transferring over the nicer corals. That will make catching the fish in the 29 much easier! I'll monitor the tank, but right now the plan is to add a fish every week to 10 days. I have 5 fish in the 29. In time, I'll add a few more wrasse's to the bunch.

First up, our local club "directs" the first photo to contain the "lucky" beer shot.

I opted for a large skimmer, as I do tend to stock heavy. I'm fanatical about weekly water changes, but I also believe my past success is due to an over sized skimmer. Hello Vertex Omega 150, dang she's shiny.

Finding a suitable sump was a royal PITA, the stand is pretty small, the skimmer pretty big = hard to find. I went with a Next Reef NRS-24 Sump, must say, nice fit!

For a brief moment, I tried to talk the wife into letting me have the stand sitting backwards so I could see the sump at all times, being such a nice fit and all, well, we compromised, so the answer was "no!".

Day 1 - Cloudy, not much to see.

Day 7 - Things look much better. Diggin the scape, only took one and a half sticks of aqua-mend. (Sarcasm)

Hopefully moving corals and equipment over this weekend, keep ya posted.

Nice start. Those marine land 60 cubes are fun tanks with lots of options. A lot more bang for you buck than a 55. The only down side is the tight space for the sump.

Yeah, I had a 55 "back in the day" - long before skimmers, and under-gravel filters were the rage. I always though it lacked depth, even with my little kid arms.

Starting point for the Hydra 52's - Bigger tank should be able to get the values up alot from when I was running them over the 29.

(At Peak)
UV - 25%
V - 40%
DB - 55%
RB - 75%
G - 35%
R - 15%
CW - 25%

Yes you can. This is mine same light, same tank. From my build thread.

Since I get asked for my settings and I can never find them, here they are.

RB, DB 100%
V 97%
W 90%
UV 85%
G 80%
R 74%

inflection points are 0800, 1000, 1250, 1640, 1930, 2130
percent of totals at inflection point DB 4% all others 0%, 80%, 100%, 100%, 80%, DB 4% all others 0%

If you do decide to follow what I have done, please proceed slowly. It took me 6 months to work up from 50% of these setting to what they are now.

so a 4 hour peak? Thanks pretty nice. I'm running at 7.5 hours at peak, maybe too much? Let me rephrase that, maybe too many hours at peak.

Only 4 hour peak, but 9 hours at 80% or higher. There is no one correct way to operate these. I suspect if you have a longer peak you would need to keep the intensity a bit lower.

Oh, this is going to be one to watch! That's one of the nicest 29g BC's I've seen, I can only imagine what you'll be able to do with twice the tank!

As an aside, is it possible for you to share the lighting profile you were running over the 29? It would actually be very helpful...

Well, when I moved the light over the 60 I deleted all the light profiles I had for the 29. But I have it written down.

Sun Rise set at 7:10am – Lights set to simulate a 20K Bulb
Deep Blues come on at 7:10am and ramp up 4 hours to 50%
Royal Blues come on at 8:30am and ramp up 160mins to 48%
Blues come on at 8:30am and ramp up 160mins to 48%
Greens on at 9:50am and ramp up 80mins to 17%
Red on at 9:50am and ramp up 80mins to 7%
Cool White on at 9:50am and ramp up 80mins to 17%
Sunset Starts at 6:30pm
Deep Blues ramp down 3 hours to 8% (8% for the lunar settings)
From 9:30pm to 9:50 I ramp down to 0% because I like lights out completely before the lunar settings start.
Royal Blues ramp down 160mins to 0%
Blues ramp down 160mins to 0%
Green ramps down 80mins to 0%
Red ramps down 80mins to 0%
Cool White ramps down 80mins to 0%
Lunar Setting
Deep Blues set at 8% and run from 10pm to 3am.

Once I converted the fixture over to a Hydra 52, I didn't write any of the settings down. Sorry

I have no beer in the house and you have to post that picture. :D

Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Howdy stranger! Thanks, really looking forward to this build, get to fix all the things I did wrong in the other tank.

As far as beer goes, that's my other hobby. I have a 12x20 shed out back for brewing with a steady 3 taps always pouring. My neighbor has a man crush on me.

Thank you very much for that, but now I'm a tad confused. Which light were you originally running on the 29? Looks like a Hydra 52 in the pics. The settings above were from which light?

Thanks again!

Uhhhh...in the U.S. there was only a brief stint in the 20s and early 30s when brewing beer wasn't legal. It's been completely legal to brew beer for personal consumption since 1933.

Depending on what state you live in, distilling spirits like white lightning, vodka, rum, and cider for personal consumption is also completely legal.
