Tiny Kenyan Hippo Tangs

I ordered 3 from NYAquatics. They are listed as 1 inch. I know tiny ones are supposed to be more difficult. I had a large all blue one for about 10 years that I bought off someone else who raised him from being tiny.

Can they quarantine in a 20 long, or is that too small? I feed NLS, will that work? Any other advice?

OCean nutrition formula 2 cubes , nori sheets, spirulin brine shrimp for starters, if you have access to live bait or grow your own even better .

They'll most likely be super shy and easily spooked by many things around them so most success with lots of possible hiding spots and away from areas of the house with lots of commotion .
So you may also want to cover sides of the tank.

If you do TTm 20's are fine,
If you do a conventional qt With hyposalinity , formalin baths and prazipro 3' of swimming space could be nice [emoji1360].

Is ttm or hyposalinity really needed unless the fish show signs of ick? Formalin seems really extreme for a fish that appears healthy.

My last Hippo never ate nori.

Tangs are known to be magnets for ich.

I was simply stating a few course of actions you may want to choose. You're the one staring at these fish not me lol .

It really depends on where and how they were caught ... who's the intermediate and how they treat ( or not). How and with whom they ship if it happens to be a mail thing.

There's a lfs over here from whom I never Qt . And two others where I either formalin dip or just qt with praxi and observe.

There's so many variables that come into play.

Others will qt systematically no matter what!
Depends on experiences you've had good or bad I guess.

The problem with that is Ich may not be visible for a long time. Are you prepared to monitor them in QT for a long time? I'm actually ok with observation only QT (other than prazipro which all fish get before going in the DT) just not with tangs.

If you do chose not to treat for ich I would watch them for at least 8 weeks.

I bought a nickel sized one years ago. I thought it was pretty easy to take care off. I mostly hid until it got to about 2-3 inches - which didn't take long. It wasn't fussy about food. Several feedings a day are important to bulk them up and put on a little size.

It did bring ich to the party, causing me to finally invest in a hospital/quaranteen tank. It cleared up pretty quickly with hyposalinity. 7 or 8 years later I still have it. It grew to about 7 inches and would probably be a bit bigger in a larger tank.
