Tiny Regal Tangs

I have seen tiny regal tangs about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. Are these harder to care for? How long would this fish stay a smaller size? Could it be kept in a smaller aquarium for longer?

depends on where they are coming from.
the ones from marshalls that i have seen pass through Hawaii do awesome. Always eat and never break out in anything.
I have one now that is an inch maybe and he is awesome. He came with the tank when i bought it so i kept him (also have another one about 2")

watch them closely at the store. They need to eat throughout the day in order to become healthy. I feed 2x a day. Once with mysis and later with nori.

The smaller the fish, the more prone it is to stress and diseases thus it has a higher chance of dying in an aquarium.

I would usually agree, in that I really dont like to recommend tangs under 2.5", but we have been getting in some 1/2-1" size blue's and well they eat like pigs. We are on out second large batch at work and they are all eating, and come right up to the top for food.

I say give them a week at the LFS, and if they eat go for it. Just make sure you dont have anything big that would beat up on it.

i got my first blue tang at maybe 1/2" and it did very well...grew to 2 1/2" before it died (Hurricane Rita). my current one i bought when it was 3/4" and is now 2"+, only problems i have had with it are it does occasionally get ick which i just battle by feeding it mysis soaked in selcon and garlic extreme every other day and seaweed on the days i dont feed mysis. best treatmen for ick. i have read that tangs adjust to aquarium life better the younger you get them. just make sure when they are under 1" feed them twice a day or more.

so would it be ok then in my 65 if bought at 1''

You won't be able to keep it in a 65 gallon very long. They grow pretty quickly if they are well fed.

should be fine as long as there is enough space in the biolaod to support it when it gets bigger

They need way more room then a 3ft tank to support them. Its not about the bioload here even though tangs graze and eat and poop all day so in time it will. But the more improtant thing here is room to grow and graze. Need atleast a 6ft tank. I have mine in my holding 50g qt tank right now and i just can't wait to get it in my 280. It seems cramped and i can already see aggression coming from it and their normally a very peacefull fish.

! added 3 Regals of between 3/4" and 1" about 15 months ago - they suffered a bout of ich almost immediately, but after successful treatment they have thrived - the largest is now a shade over 4" and the other two are a touch below.

yeh i only see tiny regals at the lfs.... i wonder why i dont ever see such small specimens of the other tang varietys?

The tiny regal tangs I've seen at the LFS lately have been extremely healthy, better than I'm used to seeing with such tiny specimens.
