Tissue peeling off on Cali tort

pookstreet

Registered Stick Killer
I noticed yesterday that tissue is sloughing off of the huge Cali tort in the center of the tank, starting at the base of the left side branches. Got worse this morning when I looked at it. The right side seems to be fine. I have made no changes to the tank whatsoever and the parameter are fine. I may have to pull it out and cut off the left side. That's the center piece of my tank :( :( :(

Can anyone shed some light on what might be the possible culprit? Thanks.

Pix taken with just sunlight.

The right side is also showing some STN but not like the left side.

Here it is just to the left of center.

Is that the only SPS affected?

Could something be stinging it or sending slime in it's direction?

As far as I could tell, yes. I don't see it on anything else, YET!

All surrounding corals are at least 2-3 inches away.

Duuuuuuuude! That tort is huge! :eek2:

I can't be helpful in any way, just wanted to say hi.

Hi Kenny!

(btw, the tank looks great!)

Perform any tank maintenance in the last week? water changes, reactor media changes?

Maybe time for increased flow due to it's impressive size?

as in when it goes up to high after changing your media?

Some of my SPS do this when I don't pay attention the alk.

WC and GAC change out was done over 10 days ago. Nothing else has been done since then. The 6100 in the back right corner has stopped, probably just clogged. I am changing out the 2 front 6100's to 6105's today. Hopefully it's just a flow issue. But it's just weird that the tissue is peeling off like that. Usually, tissue loss due to insufficient flow is pretty slow. This isn't quite like RTN but faster than STN.

I did check Ca and alk 2 nights ago and the coral appeared fine then. Ca was at ~460 and alk was ~8-9. Those are the 2 parameters I usually check. Every few months, I send a water sample to AWT and the last batch came back pretty normal.

I had some tissue sloughing on my rainbow monti. I moved it up towards more light and a bit stronger flow and it went away. Now its grown back and actually doing alot better. Im not sure if this helps....It looks like you have tunzes, so im sure that flow isnt an issue. In the first picture is that mesentery filaments coming out? Is something around it stressing it out? You have something on your hands when you do maintenance? Stray chemicals in the air going through the skimmer and into the tank? Just some thoughts, sorry for the multitude of questions.

I would first assume a flow issue.

Second Bacterial infection.

Third........some corals when they get so darn big just give up for lack of a better word.......

Good Luck!

No worries. Thanks for trying to help with the various questions. It seems everything in this hobby is about the process of elimination. Unfortunately, sometimes when you do figure it out, it's too late.

In the first pic, it's actually the tissue sliming and peeling off. I always wear gloves when putting my hands in the tank for a couple of reasons. One of which is to avoid getting the stuff on my hands into the tank. The system is in the garage so it's possible that something in the air got to it but I highly doubt it. It's only happening to the tort and nothing else.

What's your turnover rate in the tank? Have you started adding any new supplements?

I have 4 6100's, 2 of which were just replaced with 6105's yesterday. The return is a Dart. I don't think flow is an issue at this point since it's only affected the left side of the colony as of yesterday, which is actually a bit closer to the 2 Tunzes on the left side of the tank.

Thanks Kirsten. I am suspecting something bacterial also but it's strange that only this colony is affected. I guess I should take that as a good thing :( That would suck if you third theory is right.

frag it ASAP and move it if you can to a different system for now.
that IMO is a bacterial infection of some sort. almost similar to brown jelly infection. I've had this happen in the past and even to a purple digitata if you can believe that. it seems to just eat away. so frag and move IMO.
