Titanium Heaters, whats the best?

Anyone here using titanium heaters? If so, whats the best brand to go with? Which ones are more reliable, and is better to go with 2 lower wattage vs. one higher wattage heater?

IMO it's best to decide how much wattage you want to run and then divide the wattage into at least two heaters. I like to keep one heater in the DT and one in the sump set a couple of degrees apart. A temp controller or a tank controller can help to prevent a catastrophic temperature event in your tank and is highly recommended. Heaters fail sometimes in the off position and sometimes in the on position and the controller can act as a failsafe if it's set up correctly. As far as the best brand that's a tough question. I've found that every brand of heater that I've tried so far has failed as some point for some reason, including the fancy smancy titanium ones. In fact I just had two Finnex titaniums go out on me at the same time (1 yr old) and I put the old glass Ebo Jager online that I had laying around. So far the old style Ebo Jager has been the most reliable but they do break if you bump them against something. They changed ownership a while back so who knows what the quality is at this point. I need to invest in a couple of new heaters myself at this point so I'm on the fence :)

What type of heaters does everyone use with their reef keeper????

Ok so I recently got a reef keeper and I wanted a titanium heater but I didn't know wich one to get ? Also since I have a rk I don't need a heater with its own controller right ? I found a finnex titanium heater that I was thinking about getting but I'm on the fence please help!!!!!!

Yes you want a heater with a temp setting as a fail safe. you set it a couple degrees higher than the RK.

My JBJ titanium heater has lasted longer than any other heaters that I've owned but that just my experience.

Is it possible to run more then one heater off of the same temp controller? For instance, the JBJ titanium, can you splice 2 heaters to the same JBJ controller?

Do all titanium heaters come with their own controller? I want to use two titanium heaters with a reef keeper and it appears I would not need the controller that comes with the heater. Can I disconnect this portion of the controller? How are people doing this?
I ordered a reefkeeper and now am looking to purchase two titanium heaters (1 primary, 1 back up) so I think I only need the heaters without controller, correct?

Yes.....but the more redundancy the better. I do run an Apex that is the only thing controlling a finnex 500w(actually 450w) titanium heating tube only. It would be more reliable than relying on a built in thermostat, but not as reliable as a dedicated controller.

Again the more redundancy the better. If you need heaters more often than not, running a smaller 100w heater(in my case) by itself with another larger heater running off a Ranco controller with my APex or your RKE checking and giving email or txt alerts should it go to high would be best. The less you rely on one single thermostat, the better.

Finnex heaters

Finnex heaters

Just got up this morning and noticed my tank lights were off.Looked at the controller modules, all dead.Went down to the basement and noticed the GFCI that the modules were plugged into was tripped.
Proceeded to unplug modules and reset the outlet and started plugging things back in.Everything worked fine till I got to my Finnex heaters.I`ve got 2 500 watt units and both apparently are faulty.Doesn`t matter where I plug them in they trip the GFCI.Plugged an old aqueon one in and its fine. The Finnexx were new in June!

Pretty much agree w/ this.
Eheim bought out Jager, so I'm sure the quality has to be equal to what it's been if not better, but I wish they made a titanium heater, last I checked only the glass was available.
I got a JBJ true temp and it seems to be a very quality build, like the magnetic holders.

Those JBJ's looks like the ticket. It's too bad they don't sell the heating element without the controller.

Is there much of a difference? The chances of the built-in thermostat dying is significantly higher than the chances of the heater tube breaking.

Well I've had pretty good luck w/ them on that, and since I keep them in sump where I also have a decent amount of LR there is a chance a rock could get moved/shifted and crack glass.
