TN Reefers a Great group of people.

After the last couple of months it has really stuck out how we have a great group of people in the whole TN area. I know some of you may be wondering what I am talking about but I also watch a few other boards of different states and I can say that I am real proud to be part of the whole TN reefing. One thing that we have is the cooperation of all the clubs in TN east, west, middle, north and Chatt. Rather then compete for who is better or right you try to help and support each other. And if there are disagreements between members you either work it out or have a drink of choice and forget it. Also I am glad to see how the Clubs support the LFS and the LFS support the clubs in others the LFS seem to spend more time bashing each other on the threads and getting the Moderators to shut down the clubs threads and whole forums. Which was funny to read some of those but I wouldn’t want to be part of it. Well enough rambling on but just one thing to consider if you ever thought our clubs were bad I can show you some that are really dysfunctional.

i would like to read up on some of these dysfunctional clubs!......lol....post the links wayne....lol

but yea, ive met a lot of really nice people here...i love TN

A lot of the links had to get totally removed I know you probably could just search any of the mods comments and see where a lot of there attention was on they had a bunch of them watching it.

You know overall, Tennesse folks are just great & friendly. After living on the west coast, east coast and several places inbetween, I chose Tennessee to retire in. Good weather, Good folks. and a great Reef Club!

Yeah, we've always had something to be proud of. Typically the only time there is a ripple in this forum is when the annual trouble starters decide to get some thrills. I miss you guys:).

Not to diminish what wayne is saying, I agree with and appreciate the sentiment :)

I just had this picture of wayne slurring and spilling wine on his keyboard as he was typing this. Ha.

I LOVE YOU TOO MAN!!

 Thats pretty funny, Chuck.

I agree, Wayne. I was actually just thinking this a few minutes ago. I feel EXTREMELY fortunate to be in TN while starting salt. Well, technically, I've lived somewhere in TN my entire life, but I could end up elsewhere later, so I'm extremely happy to make the relationships here and share in this great, expensive hobby! :)

i honestly wouldnt think i would have this crazy addiction if it wasnt for all the generous people ive met.......so euh, thanks~?....lol...really, im glad i accidentally googled this place....thats how i found myself here

I also think TN has a great group of people in the reefing community.

You MTRC people are always really great to us ETRCers, and ETRC loves the heck outta the Chattanooga folks. We're one big, relatively happy reefing state!

OK, so I'm naturally mean, should I not even try to join? I'm new (had a salt water tank for a while (moved from FL and had no idea there were so many reefers up here.....), but really just barely maintained the tank until I got a better job (not better money, but less hours) and can spend time with my tank). Now I talked DH into getting me a bigger tank for Christmas (Ok, I admit he was totally clueless about what it was going to cost, not realizing I would need a new refugium.skimmer, RO- the old one was a piece of doggy doodoo, pump, other stuff....). And uh, anybody got any Cheato overgrowing and want a good home?

Welcome!

I've got TONS of chaeto that would love to join your tank. :) But I would imagine someone who is closer may have some, too. Probably wouldn't be worth shipping it, unless you're coming to the swap.

Oh, I think I could drive up one Saturday and get some. I used to come up there for the horse shows all the time and drive back home on the same day!! I would buy you lunch (uh, not anywhere TOO expensive) for a swap!

I figure that I'm not going to need it until early January since I won't have the refugium set up until then. If I'm really dreaming, we might have the tank ready to swap over the 1st of Jan, but I think it will be more like the weekend after (and that's if everything goes well and we can get 5-6 burly guy friends to help carry the tank in the house (it's living in the bed of the truck with a tarp over it right now) after the stand is finished. The stand is pretty close and I've got a 75gal sump on it's way to the LFS now.

Can I swap some nice live sand for some out of the bag "live sand" too? or does the live sand really have live stuff in it? I've got all my live rock that I'm going to switch over, but I'm still scared of some big disaster if I don't do everything right.... Should I buy one of those kit things from one of the on-line shops to populate my refugium? My LFS doesn't know anything about refugiums.

Sure! I'll take lunch! :D Have you ever had a Demos' (Demos-es) steak? If not, you shall have to have one. You don't even have to pay for mine... I'm just always looking for an excuse to go!

Just let me know when you need it.

You can certainly have some sand if you'd like. I will likely be getting rid of all of mine to drill out my tank and replace it with new. Your bagged live sand should also be fine, though. It actually does have "live" stuff in it, a whole lot of bacteria. :)

Either way, you'll go through a cycle of some sort and should be fine on the other side of it. :)

Which kit things are you talking about? Not 100% sure on those.

Generally with kits like that, though, it usually doesn't hurt but isn't necessary to do. Just depends on whats in it.

There's an LFS in your area that I can't remember the name of that is supposed to be really good. If I remember it, I'll share it with ya... it escapes me at the moment, though. :)

Probably Bermuda Triangle is the LFS that you are talking about. I usually use Fish Mania. The owner of Fish Mania helps me maintain my tank (I had a big tank disaster about 7 years ago that killed everything except a big snowflake eel and I've been paranoid ever since and he helps with checking chemicals/water changes). He does a good job and is more knowledgable than I am, but doesn't know about refugiums.

The Bermuda Triangle guy seems pretty knowledgable, but I don't think he knows anything about refugiums either. I've seen regular sump systems/bioballs in his shop, but I haven't seen any refugiums or mention of them. He's got a very nice coral (for sale) tank though, so he might have some going and I don't know about it. Or else he count on the corals selling fast enough to not have to worry about it. He's pricier on his fish, but has a much bigger selection. I don't know of any other salt water places around here other than those two (would be glad to know if there's another).

I'd be glad to eat at Demos for a steak. I'll try to get hold of you before I need to come and get some chaeto (hoping that it's early Jan). I've been talked out of deep sand in my refugium and am going to put in some of my crushed coral (from current tank) and some live rock (smaller pieces from my current tank) in with the Chaeto and have a little better flow through the refugium.

Should I post here, or PM you? And I might try to make the swap. I do need to learn a lot more and start managing my tank better (just got a good RO/DI unit- my other was a single stage job and I think my corals have been suffering for it).

Nope... that wasn't it. I had to dig back about 8 pages into the ETRC forum... :)

5th Day Creations is the name. I think the owners hang out on RC some, too. I'm 99% positive they could help you with refugiums (as well as a ton of people all of the RC boards :) ). Their address is as follows:

1463 Mack Smith Rd
East Ridge TN 37412

Phone: 423-664-0500

You may want to check them out some time!

Why have you been talked out of deep sand in your refugium? Won't hurt a thing. :) I will say that crushed coral is generally discouraged because it accumulates so much waste and is hard to keep clean and can contribute to nutrient problems.

You can PM me... that would be fine. Oh, and the 2nd week of Jan. would be perfect for me as I'll have family in the first week. My wife and I would love to join you for lunch! :) We could also show you the Aquatic Critter and Emerald Bay! Fun stuff...

Brandon

Great! Lunch it is!! I'll PM you. My family is going to be OOT the first week of Jan and I'm sure the tank won't be set up by then, so probably that weekend (they should be back by then). DH might want to join us too (if he's not caulking up the refugium then....). I'll skip the coral. Deep sand is easier to keep clean than the crushed coral?

And thanks for the heads up on 5th day Creations. I had NO IDEA there was another salt water place in town! I'll have to go visit when I get back to town!
