TN Reefers a Great group of people.

Hello all, Well susan I just ran across this thread. Wish I had seen it sooner! Ive tried contacting you through our forrums on Club zoa but havent gotten any responses. Its good to here you were able to meet up with some of the other TN clubs friendly folks. Please come join our conversations as well. We can be alot of help in situations like moving your tank in the house, or sharing the refugium clippings. I really hope you can make our next club meeting. we have lined up a 500 gallon reef system to go see on january 26th. it might be a good chance to see some ideas for your new system. also if youd like to come by the house you can take a look at my system and maybe get some more refugium stuff, or frags. Dont be a stranger!

Ironman, great! I'll try to make it. I guess I'll look on the club zoa forum. I don't get on there much so far, but I'll try to find it and the posts.... And seeing your system and FRAGS?! Name the time and place.....

How was the frag swap? Did I miss a TON of fabulous things? I thought about paypaling some money and asking one of you guys to get me something cute, but I don't know when I can get there. When is the next meeting that you all have on the weekend (at a shop)?

And a thread on setting up my tank? Don't you think that would be boring?

And a question for you guys- should I glue my base live rocks together to make them more stable? With the frag glue stuff or the clay/mix up stuff? The sand makes set up tough since it wants to slide around a lot.....

hey, the meeting is this saturday around lunch time, 12:00 or 1:00 we havent really set an exact time yet. It isnt at a store this month. we are visiting a friends tank in hixson. our meeting normally consist of once a month someone hosting the meeting at there house so we can see there tank. We would love to have you come. check out clubzoa and our clubs forrum. there is a thread for the january meeting.

as for tank build threads: we all love to see a tank in the process, it also can be helpful if we see something that could end up being a disaster. then we can let you know before its to late! HEHE! and its alot of fun to watch as it goes. you have to remember when it comes to reefs there are alot of nerds out here! Im not one but im just saying! LOL

the frag swap was really good, there were alot of nice corals to choose from. I was able to enjoy my first frag swap without haveing the be involved in it. so it was alot of fun for me! you really missed out. but the chattanooga swap will be here soon enough.

I just ordered a custom tank that was delivered a few weeks ago, I plan on aranging my live rock inside the tank when its dry to get the exact look I want. then Im going to take a concrete drill bit and drill holes everywhere that another rock touches. you can then take a plastic coat hanger and cut it into 2 or 3 inch straight pieces and poke them in the holes. If your drilled hole is the right size the plastic rods should hold the rocks pretty good. the only issue I saw with glueing was it is more permanent once the tank is running, with the plastic rods it would be more like a jigsaw you could rearange. anyway, just an idea.

ok, give me a link. I didn't bookmark it and I thought it was on the Chattanooga reef club section under clubs, but I can't follow it. Might be earlier in this thread though....

Give me a link and I'll find it a LOT quicker...... (I know you have it bookmarked....)

The thing with deep sand beds is that you don't clean them. :) Get a few critters to keep the upper part cleaned a bit (such as nassarius vibex snails, conchs, other cleanup crew) and leave the rest alone. :)

Its pretty much maintenance free and doesn't become a total nitrate dump. In fact, it creates an environment (further down in the sand) for anaerobic bacteria (such as those who consume nitrates ;) ) to thrive. You actually don't even WANT to mess with it, as it can potentially stir up nutrients that have settled into it. \

I've read that also. I think it may have been an important factor in my tank finally doing well. I just haven't heard anyone discussing this on the forum before. Thanks.

I bought a fabulous BIG powder blue tang (that had come out of somebody's tank that had had it for a couple of years) from Donnie at fifth day. He had a rough looking spot on his side when I brought him home and now its developed into a hole about 1mm big. Abscess maybe? He goes to the cleaner shrimp and the shrimp looks like he's digging around a bit..... The fish is a bit thin, but I thought it was because he was in one of Donnie's coral tanks and was living on the algae growth. He's not eating well, but is eating. He looks healthy other than being a bit thin and the hole.....

Any suggestions. Being a big tang, he wasn't cheap, but I needed a big tang since my others are whoppers and a tad aggressive to others.... Crossing my fingers....

Susan soak his food in garlic and make sure your hanging strips of algae like nori in your tank for him to graze. While hes a bit weak and skinny, he needs to be able to graze allot!

I've been putting in lots of grazing material since he seems to eat that the best. He lived in a tank prior to going to Donnie's so he must like some kind of food. I just wish he would eat a bit better. My other tangs are PIGS.

What do you mean to soak in garlic? They like garlic or it's to help heal the open spot....

Seriously ,I have never met a nicer bunch of people at that swap.
I wish I could have participated but I fragged everything too late and the weather was cold. Next year!!

I wish that I could have gone. Donnie told me that the prior owner of the big powder blue (BPB) fed him brine all the time, so I bought some brine and he's eating much better. He ate fairly well and I've got coralvital soaked grazing food in there too.

I bought some garlic too, so I'll work on that.

Met the Chattanooga Reef club today and had a great time. Lot's of nice people. Saw a beautiful 300 gallon tank....

Oh dear- I'd like suggestions.

When we unpacked the tank (took off all the coverings after it was in the house, the plastic black stripping on the bottom of the tank was broken in one corner. It was such a flimsy thing we didn't think it was a big deal, but the guy at the shop (not 5th day) called the tank manufacturer and we're now told that the strip is an important part of the tank stability, etc, etc and they want to send us a new tank (meaning I'd have to tear down ALL my rock, move the fish/corals/sand/etc out of the old/new tank and move it into a new/new tank). What kind of night mare is this?

Do you all have any suggestions? I know that Wayne, with building the big wrap around room tank, might have suggestions. Can we build an oak (the stand is red oak) base around the bottom of it to support it? Would that be even possible or work? I know DH would be able to build it, but would it work and how tight would it need to be?

And the big powder blue is eating well and looks ok, though he's still thin and has the hole. The hole is now 4mmx2 or 3mm. At least he's eating well (brine and grazing food soaked in coral vital). Poor fish. He doesn't need this stress.

Opinions? (and sure maybe the CRC people could advise (they would probably be willing to help with the moving things if needed), but I thought Wayne might have some ideas since he's got that WHOPPER of a wrap around fabuloso tank.....
Susan

Oh my poor powder blue. He's still eating like a pig, but the hole is getting bigger. He's put on some weight, so I still hope it heals, but it looks terrible.....

Here's a picture of him-
OK, I give up. How do you upload a picture?

And here's a close up of the hole.... Ugh!!!

I'm just crossing my fingers. And if I have to switch the whole tank out, that will stress him even more. I'm just hoping that he continues to eat well and fatten up. Maybe he'll live.....

You might try Metronidazole. Kind of an odd medication to try in an obviously aerobic area but it also has efficacy against some parasites. I had a very similar hole in a belus angel a few years ago and was able to cure it with mixing metronidazole in with her food (freeze dried brine works best)and being patient for a couple of months. Not sure if that will help but maybe worth a try. It's a good sign he is still eating well.
