what would be the best way to do green chromis if i were to add a small group? like 5? i think an odd number would be best too, not too sure, im sure Gary will chyme in on this one.

When i find my big hippo tang a new home i was thinking of adding a school of chromis to replace dori. I have a 90 with a open scape but i am still concerned about the longevity of the school. The school would look awsome when they are small, But i can not picture years down the road 5 adult chromis schooling in a 90. A school looks more natural and probably has a better chance of the entire school surviving in a large tank like garym's tank. Your tank is only 10 gal larger than mine. Think about them at full grown well fed size...5 of them. Plus whatever other fish you have, i think it would be to much.
But this is just my semi noob opinion. I am sure people do it with success.

My experience has been the same on three attempts, in two entirely different fair sized tanks. I put 11 in my 150. I had one after a year. I put 5 more in. I had 1 after a year. I put 9 in the 225. A year later it had 1 left. It's still there 2 years later though. I think I'm going to toss another dozen in again soon. I bet I only found 3 or 4 bodies though. I suspect one of the cats got the jumpers, and the purple lobster got most of the rest.

If noticed personally that groups of Chromis seem to do better and live longer when fed a few times a day. I guess I can compare them to Anthias species when it comes to tank requirements. Unfortunately most people think of them as a disposable beginners fish. If done properly they are an amazing fish for larger systems.

In my opinion chromis do best in schools if they have enough space and food. They need to either be fed frequently or have an ample supply of pods in the tank to keep them happy

Maybe it's too early for my mind to fully engage here. Perhaps I'm just a little confused. A couple comments made reference to these guys as large?!?! My experience is that they are borderline tiny. A couple inches maybe. IMHO(NOT!), Even in a 75 or 90 gallon tank, half a dozen wouldn't be too many.

My experience is the same as Steve's. It took about a year or 18 months, but I went from 7 to 1.
I don't know if you have your heart set on green chromis, but I've had good luck with black bar chromis. They don't shoal like green chromis and are VERY territorial with conspecifics. (I went from 10 to 4 in two weeks when they were 3/4 inch long and in qt.)
When placed in the display, they each have their own turf. They don't hassle any other fish and I actually have a pair that have been spawning for a couple of years. I love observing their behavior and they're a great example of interspecies competition for my students.

I've had lots of experience with Chromis over the years. Large schools tend to whittle down to a few individuals if food/habitat is scarce. One school of 5 went down to 3 in my aquarium years ago: a spawning male and two females. He made a nest for both girls at the opposite ends of my 220 and they layed eggs regularly. It was very interesting to watch him "herd" the females to each of their respective nests. (I think he killed off the other suitors.)
In the right environment Chromis are an awesome addition. Greens seem to be more planktivorous in habits than many other species. As already mentioned, feed 'em similar to Anthias... but they don't require as much food as Anthias.
Bran- make the trip out with cully. Slimer run and check out the Chromis. I still need green Stylo. I also have a Green Chromis tip for ya.
You gotta see Green Chromis when sunlight hits 'em!
