To drill or not to drill?

I'm planning my final (I hope) and ultimate reef. I thought I learned it all and would be mistake free when I set up my 80 gal, but found out that there was much more to learn when I set up the 150. Mistake often present themselves with wet floors.

Anyway, this new one is a 225. The first question I have is should I drill it. I know about drilling and have drill lots of things, warning about tempered glass etc are not necessary. But I have decided that I want to use Tunze's for flow and don't feel I need that much flowing through the sump. So should I drill anyway or use a U-tube continious siphon overflow.

Comments Opinions?

Thanks,

Mike

If this is your ultimate tank you should 100% drill it. Siphon overflows are not trustworthy all of the time IMO & IME. It would be a shame to have such a big dream tank drain all over your floor.

Drill it for a sump. If you don't want a closed loop and just want to stick with the Tunze's then don't worry about any more holes to drill. :)

drill it, I regret not drilling my 150.Never say its my dream tank. Before you now it you will have even bigger dreams!I would do a close loop or Lokk at the ocean motions 4 way unit.I am thinking of adding it to my tank.Beats having powerheads.

Okay, I plan to call the manufacturer if I can find them. Its Ocean View. There is a brand sticker on the bottom but no mention that its tempered. I can't imagine anyway that 3/4 inch glass would be tempered can you?

So what do you guys think, 1 1/2 inch bulkheads? Since I'm not planning lots of flow, just one overflow?

If it helps any, my Oceanic 200 GAL has 3/4" bottom and it IS tempered.

I would drill it...When I drill my tank, it was the best thing I could have done. I hated having to always worry about losing a syphon, or something going wrong with an over the top overflow.

You don't have to drill the overflows in the bottom of the tank. I have a 40gal that is drilled in the back. Works great. You can still install an overflow wall to hide the pipes. But you don't have to drill the bottom glass. So if it is tempered you can still drill it (the sides that is)

DRILL IT DRILL IT DRILL IT
