To little space?

Hey guys

I have 4 clown fish in my 140G. They all went along fine until yesterday when my biggest perc got tired of one of the fish. I put the pair in the sump for now.

I am wondering since a lot of breeders have their clown pairs in small spaces, what is the minimum space for a clown pair? I don't want to stress them out, i might just need to setup another tank for these.

The chamber i put them in is 8,27x11x13,78 inch around 5 gallons. Total system volume is 160G.

What type of clowns, and most people will say that1 pr. per tank is best. They really don't need a lot of space, they just hate neighbors, who are like them.

Do you have a nem in the tank? also do you have something for each pair that will host them ? Not many people, to my knowledge have had much luck hosting a group of clowns in a tank long term. Unless you have place where they can't see each other, the Dom. female will chase out everyone but her mate most of the time. Some times they will allow a sub male to stay with them, but not usually in a tank setting.

Most places recommend a minimum of 20g for a clownfish. I would set up another tank for them or maybe give them away so they have more space.

This is EXACTLY what happens when multiple pairs of clownfish are held in one tank for a period of time. What you saw was a sexually mature, dominant female trying to reduce competition for her and her guy.

You are lucky you were there to catch this quickly and seperate. Many times this ends in death of the "extras".

To answer your question, yes breeders have their broodstock in smaller tanks many times, but their purpose for having said fish is different than yours. If I were you, I would either setup another tank, or find a new home for one of your pairs.
