To much flow in my tank?

Do I have to much flow in my tank?

I have 2 x 750 gph Korilia's and 1 x 1050 gph Korilia's plus whatever my sump pump is cranking out.

So that's 2550 gph + sump pump.

I have a standard 75 gallon RR tank.

What kind of corals do you have? For SPS, it may not be enough. For softies/LPS it could be too much. Depends on how you have them aimed as well.

I know of someone who has 10,000 GPH in a 110 tank. His SPS are gorgeous.

I aim to have a mixed reef down the road. Right now I have an open brain, frogspawn and a clam.

I can't see to find a good way to point the 3 powerheads plus sump return to create areas of quick flow and some with low flow.

I think the trick is to have varied flow. Having direct constant flow is harder on corals than varied flow. Having a powerhead on each side facing each other, that way, when the two flows meet in the middle it will create more varied flow. Just try for indirect flow.

The key is definitely to have varied, non-aggressive flow.

For reference, in my 75 Gal mixed reef I have two MJ Modded 2100(gph) and two MJ 1200(gph), along with the sump return (about 700gph). The MJ 1200s run on a wave maker, alternating from each other, with everything else constantly running. I feel all this creates a varied and sometimes strong flow. However, even with all that I still feel like I have some dead spots :thumbdown.

You'll find good flow patterns through some trial and error. Pointing flow streams off glass, rocks, and into each other (but not directly) will help create varied flow that won't damage corals or create sand storms :lol2:.

34x is about right for a mixed reef. most LPS and softies will be fine with it. maybe on the low side for some sps, but should ok for most. Maybe a bit on the high side for a clam, but if it's open and happy I wouldn't worry much.

For reference on my 75 mixed reef, I use a Mag 18 for my return pump...split returns and lift accounted for gives me about 600-650 to each return in the back corners of my tank (which are pointed at 45 degrees coming into the tank. I also have 3x Koralia 750 Evo's running on my RKL using a wavemaker program
