I've come down with the fever...mantis fever. I got a sweet deal on a 24gal aqua pod and I need to find out my next species of mantis. I want an active/interactive mantis with lots of personality/swagger haha. No better place then here to get good suggestions. Tell me what your mantis is and why its the best! Thanks ahead of time.

Ternatensissssss... big, bold, colorful, sturdy, more unique than the peacock - and a knockout of a strike.

From 2004, my first mantis - a female ternatensis:

Yea that tern looks like a lot of fun. I like how he stalks his prey haha. How interactive is he? does he mostly hide when hes not being fed?

havent had that one for a a couple years, but active or at least inquistive when there was motion around the tank.

G Smithii: Extremely active, colourful, intertactive and likes to play hide and seek.
G. Childi: Colourful ,small, Interactive : Play peek a-boo from her shell that she hides in.
G. Chiragra: Active and fun to watch. Not very interactive
P. Ciliata: Interactive, colourful, spearer.
S. Empusa: Active, nocturnal, colourful, big, spearer
Zebra mantis: mine is lazy. Looks at you, thats about it.
H. glyptocercus: Interactive, NEVER leaves cavity. Small.

Take your pick! My suggestion is the purple spot! But we love them all!

Awesome, I have been seriously considering the purple spot. How are they with corals/tank mates? I have a 24g aquapod currently set up for my next little buddy. I have an unknown mantis that I tossed in my reef tank as an experiment and I think I might catch him out if nothing else presents itself. By the way he has had almost no impact on my reef/shrimps/crabs/fish. Its a small smasher that I thought was a Smithi but I have seen him so rarely that I cant be sure.

Both my Chiragras are not really all that active, theyre fun at feeding time but other than that they will only leave their burrows to do a quick lap of the tank.
Note on the "Zebra mantis" they require a DSB at least 1.5x the legnth of them, and they get over a foot long. i have a Lysiosquilla sp and that too is lazy and quite boring. If i had the pick id go for a smithii. But thats just personal prefference.
