Tobies in a Reef?

nearly 100% i've seen all pick at corals of any kind. i've kept blue spotted (C. papua), valentini (C. valentini), and white spotted (C. jactator) personally, and all ate zoanthids, lps, and softies even with twice-daily feedings.

Did they pick at sps too?

i didn't try them. our sps system here is 6000 gal. and there would be no way to get them out if they did. i assume they would eventually pick though. as corals were removed, they just went to the next available thing.

I guess that ruins that idea. Just wondering, do you think the leopard toby I linked to is any safer because it is found in deeper waters with less corals? I'm not going to risk it though. Thanks for the help!

Have a C. solandri, not safe with xenia or GSP, and nipped the buds off my green slimer, though that was only once. Never looked at my monti caps, other acro's, poccli's, gorgonians, or LPS. If your tank is mostly SPS, I'd think you'd be fine. Mine hunted pods/worms all day, didn't seem to care about corals.

My tank is currently about 90% sps, and I'm setting up another tank where I'm going to put all of the non-sps corals I have. I would love to get one of these puffers, because I have never kept one or seen one in a reef before, and love trying new things. Maybe I'll just go for it and hope for the best! If it doesn't work out I wouldn't mind tearing the tank apart to get him out, because I hate my current aquascape!

Also AquaKnight, is your puffer aggressive to the other fish?

I would think a puffer wouldn't do so hot in a sps tank because of the strong flow sps corals need. IMO puffers are not built for swimming fast water.

I currently have a valentini puffer in my tank for about 10 months.
It doesn't rouch my zoas or my mushrooms, it even leaves my gnoipora alone.
Thats all the corals I have.

But it does hunt worms/copepods n other pods in my tank.

so I would say that the valentini is pretty reef safe (atleast mine hasn't turned evil yet).

Hope that helps ya

Nope he's the lowest fish on the totem pole, but the other fish, with exception of a Rock Beauty and a pair of perculas, have been larger, Blueface Angel, Naso, 2 Leopard wrasses. He can get a little frisky at feeding, but I don't think as an ounce of aggressive bone in his body. He was afraid of the Potter's Leopard wrasse addition lol.

Most Canthigaster puffers are extremely capable swimmers. Very true, most (large) puffers definitely wouldn't do too hot in a SPS tank, but Tobies should be fine. Mine used to swim infront of my 4000gph Wave2k all the time. Wait till the LFS tries, or you try to catch one. Friggin bullets in water.

I had to move my tank, catching the valentini was a real challenge.
Normally they move so slowly like they haven't even learnt to swim, but once they know ur after them, they dart around the tank like they were superman
