Today I joined the eel world with...

... a roughly 8 inch Green Wolf Eel. Next on the list: Golden Dwarf Moray (waiting on 3 LFS to get one on their stocking list, first to find one gets my money) and then a snowflake eel.

The story behind this eel is that he was in a local Petco about 7 months ago when I was into freshwater african Cichlids (mbuna, kenyi, etc). He was a small guy then, just under three inches, but he had his own display tank. I go to that store regularly to pick up dry goods and frozen foods, rarely livestock (especially now that I do marine, I limit my purchases there if any). Today was the first time I had been there in at least a month, and he was still there. Now I've been waiting for a GDM eel, so this guy caught my eye finally. He was originally marked for 150, then went to 75, then to 35. I knew that they were trying to get rid of him, so I offered 15 dollars. The employee gets the 'aquatics manager' who agrees and sells me the eel if I can catch him. With two nets I have the eel caught in less than a minute. Applause ensues.

I'm a little worried because they've been feeding him live minnows out of the freshwater tank. On par with goldfish, I'm understanding that this is about as bad as you can get for feeding saltwater livestock? Great. I asked the aquatics manager to feed him dry/frozen food, so they threw some krill in there. He nipped at it, but didn't eat it. I tried to coax him with a frozen silverside when I got him home, but he didn't seem interested. Probably too stressed from the move still.

I've read that this fish is actually a pseudochromis more along the lines of a blenny or dottyback than an actual eel. But what I have read on this site and others makes me feel that he'll be alright with my two big tomato clowns, which I couldn't imagine fitting into his mouth. Is he reef safe? I'm alright with him not being, he may have a clownfish snack or two but after that there's nothing in my tank for him to eat, maybe nip on some corals which I could easily move to another tank. I 'eel-proofed' my tank today with a tight-fitting eggcrate lid.

I've attached a picture here, rather poor as it is iPhone quality and my glass is disgusting. I'll upload a clearer, cleaner one shortly. His coloration is absolutley gorgeous, not dull in the least big. Mottled with a very vibrant green.

Snowflake eels are really nice, it's really cool to feed them small pieces of silversides and watch them eat. Definetly one of my favorite eels.

I've set up a 10g nano and it's cycling now. I'm going to move my Tomato clown pair there, and have my 55g corner become my eel tank. I'm definitely adding a GDM, just wondering if a SFE is too much to add to that tank as well.

A 55 gallon corner tank is not really a good size for most morays. Gallon wise not real bad, just space wise. You would be ok with a GDM though. The 10 gallon nano is too small for a pair of tomato clowns as well.

So a 55 rectangle would probably be appropriate for a SFE, but not a bowfront? Makes sense to me. I was hoping on getting 3 fish for my 55 bowfront at least. If I go GWE, GDM, what would my acceptable third be? Some sort of puffer, or another eel? Any predator input here would be appreciated.

And I'll be putting the clowns in a 40breeder instead, courtesy of a local reef friend who is selling his entire setup for dirt cheap. So I'll feel more comfortable doing that.

I wouldn't put three eels in there unless it was maybe something like three GDM's for example. You might want to try a small type of lionfish or another type of scorpion

I agree with MK...I'd be worried that the SFE or the GWE would eat the GDM as well, and the GDM is worth a LOT more than the other two put together.

You could indeed do a nice dwarf lion/GDM setup in a 55 tho...

As for puffers and eels, IME, my Arothron took several bites out of my SFE's back (they healed, but looked TERRIBLE before that), so I wouldn't play that card. Likewise, the SFE killed two Canthagaster tobies by grabbing them, and even tho they inflated, they had gashes in their sides that resulted in their demise. I did keep a Diodon puffer with it successfully tho.

Hmmm...maybe I should just keep my Green Wolf Eel with other green wolf eels? Mine is male, I know that much based on the coloring. And he IS agressive (ate a scooter blenny first day, lol). He eats silversides off a stick like a champ (how mmany should I feed him? He willigly takes four+ in one serving and will eat daily).

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

My Green wolf has acclimated and become happy in this tank. He eats several silversides a day. I added a Smaller snowflake today. They've shown no aggression towards each other and have been sharing a cave. The Snowflake is slightly smaller, but was tanked at the LFS with three other moray's in a small, small show tank (probably 15g).

If anything the Green Wolf will be the aggressive one, but I don't see him eating the snowflake. We'll see how long until I can get the snowflake to eat frozen silversides, he was on mysis at the LFS and didn't look like he knew what to do when I presented him with food. He could have just been stressed though.

2 eels, wee!
