LFS suggested a Tom aqautics sump with a built in skimmer (Rapids Pro PS3) Has anyone heard of these or used one? I was thinking of getting a CPR CY192 but this is nearly half the price (which already worries me) I have a 38g tank - FOWLR - but about to start doing some corals so I wanted to finish getting all the equipment that I will need. Have a Prizm skimmer right now but not real impresed with it.

For one it has an air stone skimmer, which isnt that effective. I wouldnt get either the cpr is to expensive, unless u dont care about the money

I don't want to waste money, but I don't mind spending money on good equipment, is there another option that I should be looking at?

Then I'd look into a sump from Marine Depot and or another reputable company. But first consider the size tank you have, do research on an appropriate skimmer THEN find a sump that it'll fit in. Be sure to calculate the inside of your stand when looking at sumps.

This is the best process to go through. I do not know of a company that builds a great sump with a great skimmer already built into it. In the long run, you'll have a more effective system that you can do more with.

Check or look for Precision Marine, Lifereef for sumps and Euroreef/H&S/Deltec for skimmers and you'll never have to concern yourself with having the right equipment.

Actually, my biggest problem has been finding a sump that will fit in my cabinet. So far those are the only two I have come across that will fit, but great advice on not going with a built in skimmer, thanks for that. I will keep searching.

I would suggest making your own sump/fuge. Its a great learning experience and you will save yourself a ton. I made my 80g sump/fuge for $30. Ofcourse i had to buy the return and overflow for it which cost $120, but if i would have bought a premade sump it would have coust me hundreds. I"m guessing for that large 500-600. My LFS here sells those Tom filters. I think they are easy to maintain. The flaws i see is the overflow looks like its not to dependable, as there's always bubbles in it. The skimmer has never collected skimmate that i've seen and it uses bioballs and mechanical filtration, no fuge, no extra room. The pro's i see, is its not to expensive and has an auto top off i like and is a simple set up.
