Set up a feeding station for your seahorses. Here is a page with several feeding station alternatives....

http://www.lostmymarblz.com/hh-feeding-stations.htm

Thanks for that link Beverly. I just drop the food in the tank and let it blow around in the current. It's been working for almost 6 months, but maybe there is a reason for the station that I'm missing?

What keeps the food from blowing out of the station? Most look quite open, and some foods even float at least in part.

Marc,

I can only speak for my own feeding station. It was well sheltered from water flow. Water flow is generally quite a bit lower in seahorse tanks than in most other tanks, so feeding stations other than mine may be positioned in low flow areas as well.

As for the benefits of a feeding station, there is no food blowing all over the tank, which means less food going uneaten when it blows to places in the tank the seahorses cannot get to.

Don't have seahorses anymore, but that feeding station was one of the best additions to my SH tank. Keep a watch out for food staying in the feeder too long, which can attract bristleworms. Had a SH snick up a small BW once. Poor thing was able to spit it out, but convulsed for several seconds afterward. It survived the BW incident, and did eat later in the day.

Joe yes i do however i keep crashing my cultures as i think there getting contaminated. Ask Melev any questions you have on that as thats what he uses and ive followed his guidelines. My cultures crash usually around the 3rd split.

hey cb, i am building a feeding station for the seahorses im getting next week (the lfs is training them to eat frozen mysis and live ghost shrimp cause they got them in today). also, I plan to have maybe 3 "posts" for them to hitch to in the tank itself, and the feeding station will have its own liitle straw posts. Did your seahorses have any problems with current of corals? If so what types of problems, and how did you fix them? . how are they doing btw? and do they come in other colors besides the one you have? I don't know what colors the store got in cause I useually dont go to that tank lol, im more into blastos and fish thn seahorses, but from seeing this tank you have with the seahorses, i have been bitten lol good luck and happy new year

The tank is very low flow. Im not sure what the GPH is but its very slow. Most seahorses being imported are captive raised and already eating frozen mysis. I would make sure they are when you purchase them. If you can snap a picture of the tank and post it. Im down to one seahorse now cause the male got sick and died. I started with 2 black seahorses. One turned orange all by itself :)

cb, 21 pages and I just finished all of it. Keep up the good work. It was a most interesting read. I'm looking forward to adulthood like you and everybody else.

To all the crossbreeding naysayers out there, the differences between some of the clowns in nature are so minute (Ocellaris, Percs (True and False)) leads one to believe that these were crossbreeds in nature as well. The fact that these two CLOWNFISH, not dog and cat, chose to breed on their own is a testament to the fact that nature chose cb747's biosystem to do it in. Best of luck to him.

cb, you got my vote for TOTM.

Im afraid i have some bad news. My tank parameters went way off and ive lost ALOT of the clowns. I have maybe betwen 30 and 50 left. Most of the losses were the younger fry. Most of my first 2 hatches are still alive and happily swimming. Ive been neglecting my tanks somewhat as life gets in the way of stuff and this is the outcome. Let this be a lesson for others to learn from especially when raising fry. :(

What parameters specifically caused their demise? That would help others avoid the same thing.

hey,
by the way read the whole thread, awesome chris!! :)

i saw this his whole hybrid system when i was at his house not to long ago. its absolutely amazing. he has a whole rack of tanks and it was very orginized.:)

hey guys, i have read the posts and was really looking into raising a batch of eggs when my occ. start to spawn!

some questions- 1) is this all the equipment i need...2.5g tank, airstone and then water from the main tank to fill it up(so theres no spike)???

2) where do i go to get rotifers. i know they reproduce like mad...do i need to set-up like a 1g tank just for rotifers to grow??
where would i get them??

3) what equipment would i need saying that i need more then a 2.5g tank and airstone??

thanks alot

:) Chris,

Congratulations on your successes. Sorry for the losses too, but you'll fix the problem and move on. :eek1:

The thread is awesome and we are thrilled to be along for the ride!

Ok for the update i lost most all of the younger clowns :( The original 2 batches suffered some casualties as well so with the exception of about 20 fish im back to square one :( Nothing had died in the last few weeks so i think im past my issues.

ive been following this thread forever, but i never got a chance to post. im so excited about your clowns, and i cant wait to see what they look like as they mature. i hope that you can continue to keep them coming!!
