Tomoko's new 180

Update.

Full tank shot:

My tank is finally settling down and coloring up. I lost a number of large SPS's when I reaquascaped my tank. My huge tabling rose millipora suddenly died unexpectedly and caused a nasty chain reaction. It was sad to lose those large colonies, but it gave me an opportunity to try something new :).

Here's a new acquisition. A pink milli with blue tips to replace the rose milli.

A blue milli:

These three pictures looked fine on my laptop last night, but they appear over-saturated on my desktop. I suppose that it's due to the difference in the type of monitor screens. The pink milli is candy pink rather than red and blue milli has light to medium blue color. I need to learn how to use my camera better and also photo editing software so I can process these extra blue hue.

Thank you, Jim :).

I know it's a matter of time and I should be patient, but it looks sooooo sparse to me. My hubby tells me that I am running out of room already  . He is seeing the big picture in future (with everything grown big) while I am so near-sighted and can't see much past my nose. I want every little space filled up NOW. :D

tank looks great love the bookselves I showed it to my wife and she said when I get a bigger tank she wants it to be more along the lines of yours vs the standard looking aga I have now

that is nice aswell she will prolly blow a gasket when she sees the price for a custom tank plus when it happens it will be a fowlr so looking for somehting around 200 to 300 gal. but that is atleast a year or two away

It cost you amazingly less if you go with Ocea. I got the custom made RR tank, stand, canopy, bookcase, and a large sump for less than what a lot of places charge for tank, stand, and canopy.

really I spent about 2k on my aga rr120 tank, stand ,canopy, and pro clear sump really right at 2k with the over flow kits how does that compare with your new system

I wish I would went custom my tank is nice but yours is a living peice of furniture vs a nice aquarium I really wish I would've checked into a custom system first owell I like mine but love yours (lol)

Thank you, Skipper. I am very pleased with it :)

I hope that my tank will look filled in and nice with mature corals in a couple of years.

I am somewhat dissappointed in this fan. It is kinda noisy although Its noise rating is 20dB which is much less than many other fans with similar CFM rating.

Do any of you know of a silent 12V DC fan (120mm CPU fan)? I'd like to replace it if possible.

Air flow wise, it's not bad, but it's no comparison to a 6 inch fan. I wonder how many fans I should use for 180. I currently have two mounted on the canopy. I hope to add a fan or two over my sump.

Not sure how you're doing on looking for a fan but Newegg.com sells computer fans and they have several sizes including 120mm that are less than 10db and move ALOT of air. I've used them in my PC's and they are quiet.

Thank you for the information. I am actually looking for a fan controller or a variable speed AC-DC adaptor at the moment to reduce the noise of my current fans (unless I can find a truly quiet fan with very little noise that does not necessitate the use of a controller.)

I reviewed some CFM and db information on various fans. While some fans are better than others, I found out that a lot of high flow fans produce a similar amount of noise depending on their rpm.

Do you have a recommendation for a particular model on the page?

Antec and Thermaltake both make good fans. Thats what I use in any PC I build and I've used them over tanks here and there. Antec fans tend to be quieter. Is the fan loud even when its not mounted to the canopy? It looks like the hole is a little smaller then the fan. That can make them louder if some of the fan is blocked. Ofcourse the more air it moves the more of a hum it will have also. I probably have an extra fan control laying around somewhere. Alot of the nicer fans come with them and I never use them. Most just get tossed in the trash lol.

Thank you, 8Ball.

My fans are made by Thermaltake. I have not checked if the fan is quieter unmounted. I will check it out. You are correct about the size of the hole being smaller than the fan. The diameter of the holes is four inches whereas fans are 120 mm.

If you find an extra fan control, please let me know. I'd like to try and see how slower I need to run the fan to quiet it down enough. I may need to consider adding more fans if I have to slow it down a lot.

I am also considering making an aluminum rack to support my lumen bright fixtures and possibly either T5 or VHO actinic supplement bulbs similar to the one in this picture:

I understand that Lowes carries aluminum channels and square tubing. Do you know how easy it is to cut them? Do I need a special tool?
