remember its not sunny everyday on the reef

this has been quite a battle for the last few days and I am finding that with a lot of effort I am glad to say that the tank temp is 79' Horray...now onto tomorrow where they expect another hot day and high humidity. I will begin this process over and over agian tomorrow......like I said before if anyone has any other tips they would like to share, feel free to hijack my thread.

Tagging along as i HAD this problem. I have a 135 that was given to me...friend moved and did not want to take to California from Texas. Been hotter than...well you know....here. Anyway, i have a 30g sump which had a Mag 12 in it. Also had a few Rio's for powerheads (2100's, 1100's). Tank is in room which is on the far end of my a/c vents. Temps with a fan over the sump, open tops, PC lighting with the legs on it (raised above the tank about 4"), and it was hitting 85-87 during the day and not much lower at night. I first started by taking the wattage hungry rio's out and going to maxi-jets (now have seio's). Then i moved the mag 12 out of the sump and run it externally. Doing this only got the tank down to 85 during the day. I then put a window unit in the room...which blew right under the tank by the sump. This got it down to 82...which i was happy with.

Well then i got my first electric bill. 358.00 :eek1: . So i searched around the local marine site and found a used chiller. Set me back a mere 125.00 with the pump (JBJ artica 1/10hp). I figured what the heck and their site said it would work on the tank...i know a little small but i figured if nothing else i would put it on a future smaller tank if nothing else.

I now have it set to 81 and from what i have seen it only comes on a few of times a day. Piece of mind is now with me again, and i can enjoy my tank instead of constantly battling with the temps. We have long summers here in Texas and i must say this has been the best investment i have made to date.

I would look into the power consumption of your powerheads and anything else in the tank which could produce heat. Try to run any sump pumps externally if possible. I will soon be putting the chiller pump externally once i get the sump or tank drilled with a supply. Good luck to ya, and if all else fails...look for a nice used chiller or spend the bucks up front....piece of mind and not having to constantly fiddle with the tank has made me a happy camper once again.

Freeze ziplock bags full of RODI salt water. If your bags break or leak you'll be ok. Once they thaw you can just refreeze them.

Chiller was found on local marine site....my case it was marshreef. I do not know how often things like this come along on the forums, but the for sale section on here may be a good place to look also. I just happened upon this one in my time of need lol.

im double bagging them to keep leaks out and so far my tank is at 79....awwww...I can maybe relax for awhile. I am also doing a WC today :D

many will say 78-84 there is such a wide spectrum with that question, myself i keep it at 81 year round.maybe even as low as 76 as well.

I also have heat problems since our upstairs heat pump went out and we have not yet replaced it. My tank is in a very small computer room. I have a room AC with a fan directing the air toward the tank. I keep the doors to the stand open and a fan pointing into the sump. I keep the canopy propped open and have a fan built into the canopy as well as one propped on the back of the canopy so that it blows over the surface of the water. I have 250 MH that I run 5A-1P, so they are off during the hotter part of the day. At night, the fan I have blowing the air from the window unit is set to go off and come back on 30 min before the lights come on. For me, it it all trial and error. I had a digital AC in the room and everytime the power went off, it went off and would not come back on. I got one that was not digital and it comes back on when the power comes back on. Of course, in the winter, there is no heat upstairs and the wood we use to heat with downstairs does not keep it warm. That is another story!!

Yesterday I ran a fan on top of the tank, turned out the lights and and just left the actinics running from about 3 o'clock on. Fish went to bed early last night, all lights out by about 6. Left the fan running all night and got up this morning to 80. Right now my tank is at 82 and when it gets to about 83 I'll turn off the lights and leave just the actinics running again. I'm lucky this heat wave we are having will end by Tuesday and back to the rain again

I knew my hard work would pay off :) i am maintaining a steady 79' temp and all the fish and corals look great...just a few more days of the heatwave and we can all rest agian...for atleast the time being till the next "heatwave" starts agian
