Too Much Experience

I unfortunately have been getting more experience than I cared for when it comes to trying to save livestock on tank disasters. I have personally had 2 tanks leak bad at the bottom seam and have to tear everything down. Then my friend had one of the bottom seams on his first tank leak when he was on vacation and had to try and rescue that one. Then tonight my same friend was out of town with his kids again and he got a call that his 180g tank was empty.:worried2:

He had an equipment failure during a power outage and his tank only had a couple inches of water left. I figured it wasn't the best time to tell him "I told you" on the piece of equipment that failed. He got the call at 5:30 this morning and then called me but I was stuck at work and couldn't make it over to his place until 7 tonight. I was surprised because I was able to find a a lot of stuff still alive in the very small amount of cold water. I found the copper banded butterfly, flame angel, 2 blue hippo tangs, 1 clown, 3 mandarins, 1 scooter blenny, 10 different kinds of shrimp, 3 starfish, 3 urchins, lobster, and a couple pieces of coral that may have a chance.

Honestly Thats why I am downsizing

Honestly Thats why I am downsizing

I hate to not be able to leave my house to go on Vacation or anything even though I have a good friend who watches it and everything this last time I had a pump get unplugged somehow and my little tank only had the flow of maxijets everything lived but I am tired of the worry I want to be able to travel more. and besides a Nano will fit in my Winnebago and go with me:spin2:
I just need some piece of mind for a while then I am goiung to build another tank when I get the basement redone and a floor drain right under the tank or close.
sorry about your disasters Knock on wood I have never had a tank leak.

I feel your pain on that one. I just had an accident with my tank that pretty much wiped out all of my lps and sps corals. It really has me contemplating tearing down and selling it all. But everyone has to go through some sort of crash I think and this was my turn. Hopefully you can save everything left, good luck.

It's stories like these that make me never wanna leave the state. Seriously though, I hope everything is ok, that has to be heartbreaking.

Yeah he probably is done taking vacations after this has happened twice. One good thing is I decided to setup my quarantine tank a couple weeks ago so I atleast was able to put everything in a stable tank. Only thing I know that didn't make it yesterday was 2 fish and then today I just saw the long spine urchin munching on a shrimp. Other than that all the fish and other inverts seem to be doing great. And I am shocked about the coral that is surviving. The coral was out of water for a good 14hrs before I got to it and stuff was starting to come out today in my tank.

The piece that failed was a check valve that he was relying on to work during any power outages. He had it setup where it could be removed and cleaned periodically but I never was a fan of relying on it to work all the time.

That's too bad to hear nice of you to go over and help out though!

Check valves get visited; not if, but when, by Murphy's law.
