Too much flow a problem?

Hi all,
I keep a small reef set up with a few fish and a few softies (mushrooms, polyps, leathers etc - the "easier" ones). I had a bit of an algae outbreak and have broken down the set up, cleaned everything and am rearranging the display this afternoon. I think the algae bloom came from detritus caught in my sump and SSB in the display. I am now leaving the sand out and increasing flow in the sump and display to help keep detritus suspended for better removal. Here is my question to you all though:
Is too much flow bad for softies? I have a feeling they will not open - i have had mushroom stay closed and then detach if placed too close to power head outlets. Any advice?
In the display I have a 1250 return from sump, 2 maxijet 1200lph on wave and am going to add an ocean runner 3500lph.

Cheers.

How big of a tank? If it's between 55-75 gal, that sounds fine, and you might be able to add more.

Check into some of the prop type pumps. Nano Tunze, Seio, and Hydor Koralia's.

The key is bulk water movement, not small point source water flow. If it's a lot of water moving over a large area, everything will be fine. A lot of water focused in a small area will tick things off.
