Too Much Flow in 180?

Hey guys !

Just wondering if 42x turnover in a total system volume of 220 gallons is too much if I have a DSB and some softies and LPS in the tank.

currently I have 14x turnover but I"m planning to add two Tunze 6100's and a wavemaker (7095) to the system. Will that be ok or should I maybe start off w/ one 6100 and then add the second later if needed?

Please advise
Thanks

For softies it could potentially be too much.. But I guess it depends on where the softies are in your tank. If they're in a direct blast zone, yeah it could be too much.

For SPS people would say 42x is on the decent side of flow rates.. Go to the SPS forum sometime you'll see people with 100x+ flow rates :)

You may want to just try one PH first, and if your softies are doing okay, give a try with the second one... Actually if you're planning on a 7095 controller just add both and dial them both down.. Increase the flow until you notice an issue, then back them down about 5-10% from there and you should be good.

I considered getting both and dialing down, but will that put pressure on the pumps and get them damaged faster?

also I know some people have put up insane amounts of turnover, and some may argue that 100x or even 80x is way overkill. I just need to know what's a common turnover rate for SPS to do well in a tank?

i've had about 40x in my 30 gal softy tank with a seio 620 and penguin 1140 powerhead and it was way too much for my anthelia.. there weren't any low flow areas in the tank, so i had to scrap the penguin...

I have about 30x turnover. I have softies and LPS and still want to replace my Maxijet 1200 with another Tunze 6000 or a Vortech pump(whenever they come out).

Well, I'm one of those SPS People but I dont think it would be too much for LPS at all. I have two 6100's in a 90g and dont think its too much...

You can always turn the peak down with the 7095 controller or set them to only run one at a time. That way you still get a good left/right gentle motion. :)

TREG - is your tank barebottom? If not, do you have problems w/ sand blowing around? My tank is 6'x2'x2' and I plan to put the two 6100's on the back corners of the tank, most likely to the front middle of the tank.

Also, if all the corals are doing ok in the strong flow in the tank, will the fish tolerate this as well?

My tank is BB but when I had a DSB I still had a LOT of flow.
My 6100's were 6000's back then. (I upgraded transformers.)

You'll probably get a little sand blowing around at first but it will settle into its own. I really dont think it'll be a problem. Especially with the 7095.
Sequence 2 switches the pumps back and forth. One on One off.

My first Tunzes were two 6060's in the same 90. They were constant 100% on and I felt that my clown fish would hide more while they were on. I sold the 6060's and upgraded to the controllable Tunzes and really I dont think they mind at all. The fish are a lot bigger now too tho... I imagine it just depends on what the fish is. A tang (or the like) would love the extra flow. Something shy may not...

You Really have a lot of adjustable options with the controllable Tunzes. I wouldnt worry to much with a 6' tank but if you are, you could always start with the 6000's and if you decide later you want more flow, just upgrade the transformers. The cost is almost the same to buy them later as to just buy them now. :)

Yes the cost of adding extras is only a little more than buying a package.

I will just go ahead and order the 2x6100's w/ the 7095 multicontroller. Coincidentally most of my softies are on the bottom of the tank or on the left side of it, so when I aim my tunze's to from the corner toward front center, most of the strong current will flow away from the softies. In worst case I'll just play w/ the settings and tone them down a little.

Who knows maybe after a while I"ll just go 100% SPS :)

I can't wait to get this stuff, unfortunately there's a 6-8week wait period to get the 6100's from marinedepot.com

This is so funny. I was just reading your tank setup description and you have Ushio 14k's on it.

I ordered those online earlier today to replace my ugly yellow looking Hamilton 10K's. I have 3x250W + 2x165W Actinic VHO's.

You got any pics of the tank w/ the lights fully on?

No Pics yet. :)

The tank was just rebuilt in Dec of 05'.
Just added my first frag last week, Orange Cap to start off. Hopefully adding some colonies in the next week or two then I'll have something to take pictures of.

I'm in love with the Ushio 14k so far.
Very nice color with the T5 Blues. The MH still arent fully burn in so I only expect them to get better. :) I switched from the Aquaconnect 14K so I'm anxious to see how groth improves.

Salty Critter.
Give these guys a call, Ask for Dan. He sells the Tunze line and is one of the nicest guys you'll ever do business with. Its a small but Super Sweet "LFS" in norther Ohio. When I buy anything Tunze I buy it from Dan. His waiting list is always shorter than the big guys so you can usually get it quicker, Plus he can always use the extra business. :)
